We have students with Autistic Spectrum Conditions, who require one to one support with their higher education studies. Tutors work with an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and act as facilitators to help students develop learning strategies that will improve their study skills and enable them to become independent learners. This specialist support addresses the issues which some students might have in acquiring, recalling and retaining information in written and spoken language as well as the range of memory, organisational, attention and numeracy difficulties that students with ASCs often face when working in an HE context.
Completion of National Autistic Society (NAS) online training modules, Autism and SPELL course, or relevant in-house and CPD accredited training is required. A teaching qualification for Study Skills ASC and experience in working with individuals with specific learning differences, ideally in higher or further education, is essential. Educated to degree level is also necessary.
This is a specialist role, so applicants should have substantial experience of working with students with ASC on a 1 to 1 basis, as well as experience of working with these disabilities in an educational/learning environment. A good working knowledge of assistive technologies and related AT study skills strategies would be desirable. An in-depth knowledge and understanding of autistic thinking and learning is needed, along with an awareness of the strengths which students on the autism spectrum can bring to a learning situation and the skills to help students to make use of these strengths and overcome barriers to learning.
Applicants must be willing to meet with students on a face-to-face basis if this is a request for their support provision. Further skills/requirements include:
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to identify different strategies that enable students to build on their learning strengths
- Excellent organisational skills
- Accurate spelling and grammar skills
- Reliability and punctuality
- Ability to maintain a confidential and professional working relationship
£36 per hour freelance/self-employed contract as of September. Thorough induction training and staff development is provided, along with a dynamic CPD programme with regular training events, including ASC training. There is autonomy to manage one's own case load whilst still having ready access to a support manager. Being part of a professional and caring team for joined up working and access to resources and peer support is also included.
