Position: Rural Estates Manager / Land Agent
Location: West Somerset
Overview
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Land Agent to manage a substantial rural estate. This estate encompasses a diverse range of agricultural, residential, and development land, and the role will involve overseeing farming operations, property management, and environmental initiatives. As the Land Agent, you will be at the forefront of ensuring the estate\’s long-term sustainability—both financially and environmentally.
Key Responsibilities
Farm Contractor Management
- Appoint, instruct, and monitor farm contractors
- Develop and manage the farm plan, budget, and management accounts, utilising key performance indicators (KPIs) and industry standards
- Submit applications for farming-related grants and ensure compliance with relevant regulations
- Maximise farm efficiency by overseeing operations such as crop and livestock management, as well as buying and selling activities
AHA Tenancy Management
- Oversee the process of bringing an existing AHA tenancy to a conclusion when appropriate
Diversification Projects
- Investigate potential farm diversification opportunities
- Estimate costs and manage the execution of new projects
Natural Capital Initiatives
- Identify and advance opportunities for enhancing the estate’s natural capital
Estate Infrastructure Maintenance
- Ensure all estate infrastructure—including buildings, fencing, gates, and water systems—is maintained in excellent condition
- Coordinate with contractors for necessary repairs and ongoing maintenance
Property Portfolio Management
- Manage the estate’s residential and commercial property portfolio, including lettings, maintenance, and refurbishments
- Prepare and monitor budgets, management accounts, and KPIs for the property portfolio
Development Support
- Collaborate with external advisers to explore and execute development opportunities
Community Engagement
- Engage with the local community to ensure the estate’s social and environmental responsibilities are met
Sustainability
- Focus on ensuring the estate remains financially, environmentally, and socially sustainable for the long term
Required Skills and Qualifications
- RICS or equivalent qualification
- Strong understanding of modern farming practices, food production, sustainability, and customer demands
- Passion for farming and animal welfare
- Excellent organisational, time-management, and leadership skills
- Proven ability to manage people and motivate teams
- Strong numerical and financial aptitude
- Excellent negotiation skills
- Full driving licence required
