Beach Baker is currently recruiting on behalf of an established and growing independent planning and regeneration consultancy seeking to appoint a Director of Planning to strengthen its senior presence in London.
This is a senior, commercially focused appointment for an experienced planning professional who is already well established within the London market.
Our client is looking for a self-sufficient Director with strong client relationships, a demonstrable ability to generate new business and the ambition to develop their own desk and client base.
The consultancy works across a diverse range of planning and development sectors, including residential and mixed-use development, commercial, energy, infrastructure, strategic land promotion, master planning, logistics and industrial, hotels and leisure, healthcare and heritage.
The Opportunity
This position provides an experienced Director with the opportunity to take ownership of their market, develop existing and new client relationships, and play an important role in the continued growth of the London team.
You will be expected to operate with a high level of autonomy, combining planning expertise, client management and business development.
This is not simply a project-delivery position.
The successful individual will be commercially minded and capable of originating work, converting opportunities and building a sustainable pipeline of instructions.
You will work within a consultancy whose wider approach combines strategic planning advice with an understanding of planning policy and a focus on sustainable place-making.
Key Responsibilities
- Generate new instructions through your existing network and relationships within the property and development market.
- Develop and grow your own client portfolio, creating a sustainable pipeline of planning work.
- Lead complex planning projects from initial strategy through to delivery.
- Provide high-level strategic planning advice to developers, landowners and other property-sector clients.
- Identify new commercial opportunities across London and the wider market.
- Build long-term relationships with both new and existing clients.
- Represent the consultancy confidently at senior client meetings and industry events.
- Contribute to the strategic growth and direction of the London planning business.
- Support and mentor other members of the planning team as the business continues to grow.
About You
We are particularly interested in speaking with individuals who are already operating at Director level, or experienced senior planning professionals ready to step into a commercially focused Director position.
You will ideally have
- Significant experience within UK town planning, preferably within private consultancy.
- A strong professional network across the London property and development market.
- An existing client following or relationships that could generate new instructions.
- A demonstrable track record of winning work and developing client accounts.
- Strong commercial awareness and the confidence to operate independently.
- Experience advising on complex planning and development projects.
- Excellent client-facing, negotiation and relationship-management skills.
- The ambition to build and develop your own area of the business.
- MRTPI qualification or an equivalent level of professional planning experience would be highly advantageous.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
The organisation provides integrated planning services across residential and commercial development and advises in areas including land promotion, master planning, socio-economic matters and environmental impacts.
For the right individual, this represents an opportunity to join at a senior level with the autonomy to build something of their own within an established consultancy environment.
Rather than inheriting a narrowly defined desk, the successful Director will have the opportunity to use their existing reputation and network to develop a client base, pursue new opportunities and have a genuine impact on the future growth of the London operation.
