With a strong foundation in innovation and a growing international presence—including a manufacturing site in Taiwan and collaborations with third-party manufacturers—we\'re looking to expand our leadership in product development by hiring a Lead Hardware Engineer.
About the Role
We\'re looking for a driven and entrepreneurial Lead Hardware Engineer to head up our multidisciplinary hardware design team. This team is responsible for the full lifecycle of hardware product development—from initial concept through to manufacturing release—covering both PCB and mechanical design.
In this role, you\'ll lead the development of reliable, cost-effective, and manufacturable hardware solutions that power our global product range. This includes both in-house product development and the evaluation and integration of third-party devices that meet customer needs.
What You’ll Do:
- Lead and mentor a team of PCB and mechanical design engineers, offering technical guidance and supporting career growth.
- Manage the full design and release cycle for new products, including schematics, PCB layout, mechanical enclosures, thermal management, and manufacturability.
- Ensure the timely creation of comprehensive data packs—such as BOMs, Gerber files, STEP files, assembly drawings, and test specifications—for all client hardware.
- Collaborate with our manufacturing partners in Taiwan and other contract manufacturers to support smooth new product introductions and resolve production issues.
- Work alongside Product Management and Embedded Software teams to define hardware requirements and drive innovation.
- Assess and qualify third-party components such as sensors, power supplies, and communication modules for integration into our ecosystem.
- Lead design reviews, prototyping, component selection, and planning for EMC and compliance, while continually improving design processes.
- Stay informed on component obsolescence, supply chain challenges, and evolving trends in hardware design.
What We’re Looking For:
- Proven experience in a hardware engineering leadership role, ideally within embedded systems, industrial electronics, or controls.
- Deep expertise in PCB design, including schematic capture, layout using tools like Altium, and knowledge of high-speed design, power distribution, and signal integrity.
- Solid mechanical design experience, including 3D modeling with tools like SolidWorks or Fusion 360, enclosure design, and thermal/materials considerations.
- Understanding of compliance requirements such as EMC, CE, UL, and UKCA, as well as best practices for design validation and verification.
- Strong project management and leadership skills, with the ability to balance innovation, timely delivery, and team development.
- Experience working with offshore manufacturers and navigating the complexities of design transfer and support.
- A proactive, entrepreneurial mindset and a passion for delivering well-engineered, real-world solutions.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with HVAC, refrigeration, or building automation hardware.
- Experience using PLM systems and structured product release processes.
- Exposure to Agile or Lean development methodologies.
On Offer:
- Full-time permanent role based in Glasgow
- up to £65,000 DOE + annual bonus
- Office based due to nature of the role, especially during probation - some flexibility after that
- The right to work in the UK - no sponsorship can or will be provided
- Glasgow based candidates will be preferred due to daily commute
