Job Description
We are looking for someone who is angry at injustice, who believes in the power of ordinary people to drive change, and who is motivated to learn the craft of Broad‑Based Organising. If that sounds like you, we’d love you to join our growing team of organisers in South London as we build on our existing work in Greenwich and expand into Bexley and Bromley.
Citizens UK is the UK’s largest, most diverse and most effective people‑powered alliance. We bring communities and local organisations together to campaign on key issues such as improving road safety, reforming the immigration system, and advancing the Living Wage. Our work is driven by local leaders and a commitment to inclusion.
Main Responsibilities
The principal responsibility of an Associate Organiser is the agency’s own professional development: learning the craft of Community Organising under the guidance of an experienced Community Organiser. You will work intensely with a small number of member organisations, growing your experience, skill, and responsibility progressively.
Key tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Build relational power: Actively participate in power analysis, develop relationships with leaders, conduct 15‑20 weekly one‑to‑ones, and tell compelling Community Organising stories.
- Identify and develop leaders: Spot potential community leaders, create development opportunities, and deliver training workshops.
- Strengthen institutions: Ensure understanding of member institutions’ interests, recruit new institutions to the alliance, and support core‑team development.
- Support actions: Run listening campaigns, plan and execute actions, support Be Well institutions through the cycle of action, and evaluate outcomes.
- Fundraising and finance: Recruit new dues‑paying institutions, negotiate membership fees, and assist with invoicing and fee collection.
- Teamwork and professional development: Engage in self‑improvement, collaborate with colleagues, meet reporting deadlines, and share learning with the South London team.
- Community Organising craft: Schedule regular relational meetings, commit to training days, and participate in fortnightly learning sessions.
Personal Specification
Experience
- Previous campaign experience.
- Evidence of a leadership role with peers or in local community activities.
- Project management experience, with a track record of delivering work on time and to standard.
- Experience of learning by doing, openness to feedback, and coachability.
Key skills and knowledge
- Excellent interpersonal awareness.
- Strong concern for impact and ability to adapt behaviour to others’ needs.
- Effective communication, speaking with conviction and passion; able to build logical arguments.
- Self‑starter with initiative and independent work capability.
- Belief in ordinary people’s capacity for change and skill in building cross‑divide relationships.
- Positive enthusiasm for working with faith congregations, trade unions, schools, and other community organisations.
- Interest in and experience with politics and public life.
- Ability to work in a team and within accountable relationships.
- Self‑motivated, adaptable, and willing to work evenings and weekends.
Our organisers attend and lead events in the evenings and weekends. We operate a Time Off in Lieu approach and flexible arrangements to support work‑life balance.
The successful applicant will undertake a satisfactory Enhanced DBS check, renewed on a three‑year cycle.
