The Role

The Senior Engineer provides site engineering duties for several projects in the region, supervising trainee and junior site engineers. Responsibilities include establishing level and survey control for contracts, setting out detailed works per contract drawings, ensuring regular checks and maintaining health, safety and environmental compliance.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish the level and survey control for contracts and hand over to the Site Engineer for daily setting out.
  • Set out detailed works per contract drawings, ensuring regular checks and competence of the Site Engineers.
  • Be present for critical setting out activities.
  • Maintain accurate health & safety and work environment records in compliance with organisational and legal requirements.
  • Deliver work safely, without environmental incidents and to specified quality without defects.
  • Assist the Site Agent/Sub‑Agent in developing efficient work methods and techniques.
  • Act as deputy for the Sub/Site Agent where required.
  • Handle materials procurement: undertake pre‑start take‑offs, work with PMs and populate procurement schedules.

Managing Quality

  • Carry out instrumental checks according to agreed guidelines and schedules.
  • Complete quality audit records following agreed procedures and timescales.
  • Provide feedback to the Site Agent/Sub‑Agent on corrective action areas.
  • Compile ITPs and Quality Management Plans – lead for the region.
  • Brief ITPs to the Site Teams before delivery.

Managing Resources

  • Ensure resource availability and consistent quality, quantity and delivery, advising the Contracts Manager and confirming engineering resources.
  • Address resource problems promptly, liaising with the Site Agent and reporting on Junior Engineer progress.
  • Maintain complete and accurate resource records.
  • Organise and conduct toolbox talks.
  • Prepare and issue method statements.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships among operatives, staff, clients, contractors, suppliers and the public.
  • Act as line manager for engineers, supporting their development and growth.
  • Participate in the recruitment process for new Site Engineers.

Managing Information

  • Engage early with SE on project awards, tender handover meetings and pre‑commencement meetings.
  • Obtain all ‘as‑built’ information, ensuring accuracy and relevance.
  • Record, store and maintain correspondence in line with organisational and legal requirements, planning a minimum of two months before project completion for as‑built and QA handover.

About You

  • Previous experience setting out on civil engineering projects, including highways, infrastructure and reinforced concrete works.
  • Degree/HNC or equivalent in civil engineering.
  • CSCS card, SMSTS and confined space training.
  • Experience using AutoCAD.
  • Ability to manage and deliver a project with minimal guidance.
  • Experience running reports and maintaining accurate records.
  • Effective individual and team working skills.
  • Strong communication with client representatives, site teams and operatives.
  • Ability to challenge designs and resolve problems to conclusion.
