This exciting and varied role involves completing robust, child‑centred assessments and recommending specialist equipment such as seating systems, bathing and toileting aids. The role includes assessing the need for both minor and major home adaptations and progressing these through the Disabled Facilities Grant processes. It also requires completing moving and handling risk assessments, writing manual handling care plans, and prescribing hoists and slings to ensure safe transfer of children. The role works closely with local housing associations, BCP Homes, and multidisciplinary teams to improve a child’s access to essential facilities within their home.
Responsibilities
- Complete robust holistic assessments focusing on a child's function and occupational needs within their home environment.
- Assess, recommend and prescribe equipment to improve function and prevent deterioration of physical skills such as postural seating systems and bathing/toileting equipment.
- Support children, young people and their families/carers through advice, specialist equipment provision, risk assessments and assistance with minor and major adaptations to properties as appropriate.
- Progress OT recommendations following Disabled Facilities Grant legislation, working closely with the grants team to complete minor and major adaptations within the child's home.
- Complete moving and handling risk assessments and create bespoke planning for children with complex physical disabilities and health needs.
- Work in partnership with Health, Education and Social Care colleagues, completing joint assessments where appropriate and contributing to EHCP plans as necessary.
- Promote independence of the child and reduce risks associated with the care of children or young people with disabilities, supporting families to thrive within their home.
- Undertake temporary and occasional responsibilities as determined by the Children's Occupational Therapy Team Manager.
- Participate in staff training within the council and across teams to share good practice.
- Provide clinical supervision to Occupational Therapy students on placement where appropriate.
- Use computerised systems such as Word, Excel and Mosaic.
- Ensure case recording and documentation complies with departmental and HCPC guidance and is available for statistical purposes.
- Complete Continuing Professional Development in line with HCPC and the Royal College of Occupational Therapists guidance; ensure all mandatory training is up to date and recorded.
Qualifications
- Qualified and HCPC registered Children's Occupational Therapist.
- Relevant experience working with children who have disabilities and complex health needs.
- A diverse knowledge and understanding of how disability can affect children and their families, and a sound awareness of safeguarding.
- Experience working alongside Social Workers, Family Support Practitioners, and a multidisciplinary social care team.
- Car driving with business use insurance is essential for this position.
Employment Terms
- This is a permanent 22.5 hour part‑time vacancy, worked over three days to be agreed by the Team Manager.
- Starting salary is £44,075 (pro rata for part‑time colleagues).
