Role Summary

BCP Children’s Services seeks experienced Independent Reviewing Officers (IROs) / Child Protection Chairs to help make a difference in the lives of children and young people. The successful candidate will ensure the voice of the child is central, provide scrutiny, support, and challenge to social work teams, and maintain safe, timely, and needs‑led plans for children.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide scrutiny, support, and challenge to the work of social work teams.
  • Ensure care and protection plans progress within a timescale that meets the child’s needs.
  • Communicate effectively and engage productively with families, professionals, and partner agencies.
  • Robustly manage and chair case conferences and child‑in‑care meetings.
  • Balance a mixed workload of child protection and child‑in‑care duties.
  • Participate in induction, ongoing professional development, and a supportive learning environment.

Qualifications

  • Social work qualification and registration with Social Work England.
  • Substantial experience working within the child protection and child‑in‑care arena.
  • Confidence in chairing meetings and working with partner agencies.
  • Demonstrated aspiration to improve outcomes for children and young people.
  • Successful candidate will undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Additional Information

The role is based in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, and is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Staff will receive robust induction, regular review meetings with the Service Manager, and support for wellbeing and work-life balance.
