Role Purpose
BBYO UK is the independent UK region of the world’s largest Jewish youth movement which engages around 70,000 teens across over 60 countries. BBYO is an inclusive and welcoming movement where Jewish teens of all backgrounds find belonging, develop their Jewish identity and build lifelong skills. We create meaningful experiences that resonate with teens today, supporting and empowering teen leaders to foster community and leadership. The Executive Director (ED) is the organisation’s senior staff leader, responsible for the overall management and delivery of BBYO UK’s programmes, safeguarding, fundraising, communications, partnerships and operational systems. Working closely with the Board of Trustees and volunteers, the ED will ensure BBYO UK is well-run, financially sustainable, and consistently growing the number of teens engaged in high quality BBYO programmes.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Management: Ensure the organisation’s ongoing excellence in programmes, fundraising, communications and systems, and compliance with financial, administrative and safeguarding policies. Actively engage and energise BBYO’s volunteers, board members, event committees, alumni, partnering organisations, and funders. Develop and maintain a strong relationship with the Board of Directors; attend and report to board meetings, seek and build board involvement with strategic direction. Lead, coach, and develop BBYO UK’s staff. Ensure effective systems to track progress, regularly evaluate programme components, and measure successes that can be effectively communicated to key stakeholders. Prepare the annual budget, and event / experience budgets, liaise with the Treasurer to establish financial policy, procedures and ensure fiscal health of the organisation; work with the bookkeeper and accountants to manage expenses, payroll, and year end accounts.
- Fundraising & Communications: Expand local revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing programme operations and regional expansion. Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand. Use external presence and relationships to create new opportunities. Apply for and manage grants (with Trustee support, where applicable). Support the Board in the preparation and delivery of materials and plans to raise an endowment fund for BBYO UK.
- Planning and organisational growth: Work with the Board and Trustees to drive BBYO’s strategic planning process and the development and execution of a five year business plan for the organisation. Manage the building of partnerships in new markets, establishing relationships with funders, community leaders, and other stakeholders at each site. Consistently grow number of teens engaged by BBYO’s programmes.
- Partnerships and Programme Oversight: Trek (BBYO UK’s International Summer Tour to Israel/Europe/UK): Liaise with the trip providers and key partners. Ensure legal compliance in all areas including safeguarding and financial management. Prepare the Trek budgets. Provide senior customer service to Trek families when necessary. Support and oversee the itinerary and programme development. Ensure administrative duties in respect to registration, marketing, recruitment, welfare are performed to a high standard.
- UJIA: Manage this relationship at a senior level, attending partnership and allocations meetings, supporting the professional development (POD) programme, and working with the professional team in allocations application submission and presentation.
- BBYO International: Manage funds allocated from BBYO International to the UK office. Liaise with senior staff to ensure integration with the UK programme where appropriate. Attend international meetings and events as required. Collaborate with colleagues around the world on relevant projects. Crisis management and senior customer service when appropriate, managed in partnership with the board of Directors.
- Safeguarding: Serve as the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). You’ll be supported by the Safeguarding Trustee and external specialist advice where required. (DSL training will be provided if required). Seek expert advice on serious cases of child welfare. Enforce BBYO’s safeguarding policy and ensure staff and volunteers are adequately trained. Manage internal reports with the professional team and volunteers. Manage external reporting with appropriate legal bodies when needed. Create care plans for individuals as needed with relevant trustee and professional staff. Liaise with Safeguarding Trustee to consult on serious incidents. Report to trustees at board meetings with full account of major safeguarding incidents from previous term (anonymised).
Other duties as reasonably assigned by the Board of Trustees, consistent with the seniority of the role.
Person specification
The ideal candidate will be a driven and motivated self-starter, who takes an entrepreneurial approach to organisational management. They will value the creation of Jewish activities that resonate with teens today, encouraging them to experience Judaism and Zionism on their terms, and providing them with the tools, resources and guidance to programme in a way that adds value, meaning and identity to their lives. Candidates must demonstrate a dynamic personality and feel comfortable and confident engaging and interacting with both the teen and adult communities. The successful candidate will work to support and empower teen leaders.
Essential
- Management experience (non-profit or mission-led)
- Experience and understanding of youth work, including how to work with, mentor, support and foster relationships with young people.
- Transparent and high integrity leadership, with demonstrated experience of managing and coaching staff in a high-performing team.
- Ability to work creatively as a self-starter and independently (coupled with a can-do attitude and drive), as well as being a team player.
- High level strategic thinking and planning; ability to envision and convey the organisation’s strategic future to staff, trustees, volunteers and donors.
- Solid organisational abilities, including planning, delegating, programme development and task facilitation.
- Experience owning or managing a P&L and taking responsibility for delivery against budget.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy.
- Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends with flexibility to be on call as required.
- Ability to travel to the USA, Europe and Israel 2–4 times per year.
- Excellent donor relations skills and understanding of the funding community.
- Patience, determination and tenacity.
Desirable
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Knowledge of the UK Jewish community and youth movements (or demonstrable ability to learn about different cultures and communities).
- Experience of working with a Board of Trustees / Directors.
- Marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
- A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results.
- Demonstrable success in establishing relationships with individuals and organisations of influence including funders, partner agencies and volunteers.
- Training in safeguarding and child welfare.
