A Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant is an experienced team member who provides expert advice on various projects within the built environment throughout different stages of the project life cycle. In addition to their technical expertise, they assume responsibility for managing project tasks and ensuring successful project delivery on large-scale and/or technically challenging projects. At BB7, a Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant is a crucial project team member. They oversee and fully manage large-scale and/or technical projects and lead a team of Engineers/Surveyors/Consultants. They play a significant role in mentoring and developing their team members’ careers. A Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant is instrumental in securing new business through repeat work and engaging in business development activities. While all employees are expected to embody the company’s values, the Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant is a role model within a team, consistently producing high-quality work from project inception to completion in line with BB7’s Quality Assurance policy. Responsibilities Lead large and/or complex projects as a Project Manager: A Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor would be the Project Manager and day-to-day lead on large and/or complex projects at all stages of the project cycle, including the construction phase. They are expected to lead the Project Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant on these projects and report directly to the Project Director as required. A Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant can successfully manage large/complex projects from start to finish to ensure BB7’s projects are delivered to high quality, on time, within budget and achieving the client’s KPIs. Successfully lead small to medium complexity projects: This involves the Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant overseeing aspects of project management, including commercial support, risk management, debtor days on the project, performance monitoring, raising invoicing and the project manager’s budget and resource allocation plans. The Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant must also be good at problem-solving and decision-making, addressing any challenges that arise to keep the project on track. Through precise attention to detail and a commitment to excellence, the Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant ensures the successful delivery of small to medium complexity and scale projects, reinforcing BB7’s reputation for reliability and quality. A Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant is expected to secure new projects and maintain strong, effective working relationships with clients, stakeholders, and team members. Actively engaging in business development activities is seen as beneficial for securing new projects. This involves identifying potential clients, preparing proposals, discussing the proposal, and negotiating appointments. A Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant must also manage their pipeline and conversion rate to ensure they are chasing sent proposals to close them or gather feedback on why proposals may not have been successful. Fostering and maintaining robust relationships with Clients is key for a Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant so they can understand the client’s needs, provide expert advice, and deliver exceptional service. A Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant is responsible for effectively managing a team of Engineer/Surveyor/Consultants and taking a mentoring role and fostering a supportive and productive work environment. Additionally, a Principal Fire Engineer/Surveyor/Consultant must manage workload distribution for their projects in the team to ensure team members are not over capacity, as well as the financial performance of the team and pipeline management of the team. Requirements The following points are considered ideal for the role: An Engineering Council accredited BEng Hons, MEng, MSc, or equivalent. Associate Member of IFE/CABE/Engineers Ireland or a relevant professional body is expected. Working on a plan to become Chartered with a body and obtaining Interim CEng. Self-managed, goal orientated, professional conduct, integrity and professional ethics. Excellent client service and consultancy skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
