DEPARTMENT: Strategy, BBC Group Strategy and Transformation

LOCATION: London – 3 working days in the office with the remainder hybrid working

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £53,000 - £58,000pa plus London Weighting (£5,4419pa), depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The Strategy team helps the BBC define its future and develop a plan for getting there. It acts as an independent advisor to the leadership of the BBC, enabling senior leaders to develop creative and practical ideas for how the BBC and its services should evolve. The team is part of the Group Strategy & Transformation division, with the Chief Strategy & Transformation Officer sitting on the BBC’s Executive Committee.

The Group Strategy team sits at the heart of the BBC’s decision-making process and influences the BBC’s long-term future. We are a creative, innovative team drawing on data, insight and information to help advise senior BBC leaders on how the BBC’s content and services should evolve. We help the organisation to evaluate trade-offs and choices where the answer isn’t highly obvious.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Provide in-depth research and analysis, from internal and external sources where appropriate, of financial, output, audience, scheduling, competitor, regulatory and operational considerations.
  • Use qualitative and quantitative data analysis techniques.
  • Keep up to date with developments in broadcast media and related sectors.
  • Develop strategies capable of managing the threats and opportunities that such developments represent.
  • Present analysis and recommendations to senior stakeholders, verbally or in writing, as required.
  • Ensure that such presentations are effective and persuasive through the use of a variety of techniques, for example PowerPoint and Excel software packages.
  • In agreement with Heads of Strategy or Controllers of Strategy, lead projects or workstreams shaping corporate and group-level plans.
  • Facilitate or manage ad-hoc project teams of senior stakeholders, ensuring that strategic issues are considered by such teams.
  • Provide strategic support to senior management of sufficient sophistication to enable the BBC to maximise value for money for the benefit of the licence fee payer.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Substantial and proven experience of strategy development within a large organisation or consultancy environment, including leading and delivering strategy projects.
  • Ability to anticipate the challenges and opportunities that arise from consumer market, technological changes and translate these into coherent strategy.
  • Significant experience of data analysis including financial, budgeting and statistical data, with in-depth understanding of relevant tools and methodologies.
  • Advanced computer aptitude, particularly with Excel and PowerPoint packages.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including report writing and editing, and the ability to write structured, insight-driven and persuasive documents.

DESIRABLE:

  • Understanding of the broadcasting sector and new media developments, and sensitivity to the aims of the BBC and its unique obligations as a public service broadcaster.
