The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra is the oldest radio orchestra in the world, founded in 1922 as the 2ZY orchestra. We have been broadcasting live music for over 100 years and are still strong today. We are looking for an exceptional musician for the position of Section Principal Horn to create some of the finest broadcasts, recordings and performances in the world. In recent years we have launched major partnerships, expanded audiences and delivered projects that have earned acclaim, including five‑star performances and popular recordings.
Purpose of the Role
- Sit as Section Principal Horn, demonstrating outstanding solo and orchestral playing abilities.
- Lead and manage the Horn section, fostering a supportive environment and ensuring the performance and welfare of the section in partnership with the Orchestra Manager.
- Maintain positive relationships with conductors, freelancers and all orchestra members.
- Play a key role in the life of the BBC Philharmonic, committing to maintaining and enhancing the orchestra’s reputation.

- Outstanding professional orchestral and solo playing abilities.
- Knowledge, passion and appreciation of the repertoire performed by the BBC Philharmonic.
- Leadership, motivation and collaborative working skills, including the ability to provide constructive musical feedback.
