Why join the team?

BBC Scotland Operations is looking for a motivated individual to join our Gaelic teams in Stornoway and train as a Technical Operator specialising in radio. Our team provides expert technical support and production skills for a wide range of radio programmes and live broadcasts across Scotland.

Based in BBC Stornoway, this is a unique opportunity to develop your skills through specialised training and hands‑on experience. You’ll play a key role in supporting BBC Radio nan Gàidheal output from the Western Isles, contributing to this vital Gaelic radio service.

Your key responsibilities and impact

  • Sound – learn how to capture, mix, and deliver clear, high‑quality audio for live and pre‑recorded radio programmes.
  • Studio Operations – operate broadcast equipment, manage studio set‑ups, and ensure smooth technical delivery during live output.
  • Outside Broadcasts – support live radio coverage from locations across the Western Isles and mainland Scotland, helping bring events to air.

You will learn both on and off the job. You’ll attend regular meetings (in‑person or virtual) with our learning provider, working towards an industry‑recognised SCQF Level 7 qualification in Creative Media.

Your skills and eligibility

We’re interested in your passion for radio production, sound, and storytelling, and your enthusiasm for delivering world‑class content. We look for potential and offer you the opportunity to apply your transferable strengths and experience.

  • Enthusiastic and curious, with a real passion for radio production, sound, and storytelling.
  • Team player who enjoys working as part of a creative team, thrives in live broadcast environments, and is eager to learn technical skills that keep our radio output on air.
  • Genuinely interested in radio and committed to developing technical and creative abilities – no previous broadcasting experience is required.
  • Fluent in Gaelic language, to serve our Gaelic‑speaking listeners of BBC Radio nan GĂ idheal.

This scheme is aimed at non‑graduates. If you have a degree and are interested in similar roles, we recommend applying via the BBC careers site.

Eligibility criteria

  • Be 18 years old or over by the time the apprenticeship begins in September 2026.
  • Be legally eligible to work full‑time in the UK for the entire duration.
  • Not currently enrolled in another apprenticeship programme.
  • No prior learning is required to apply.

For candidates under 19 years of age at 8th September 2026: you must have achieved Core Skills (Scotland) at SCQF Level 5 or 6 in Communication and Numeracy.

Ready to apply?

Don’t miss the chance to be part of something exciting. If you’re eligible, you’ll create a candidate profile and answer a few questions – no CV or cover letter needed.

You’ll need to live within a commutable distance of Stornoway. If you’re interested in a different location, check out other adverts – but please apply to only one.

Relocation support is offered to a limited number of apprentices each year and would be considered for this position, subject to meeting the qualifying criteria.

This is a fixed‑term apprenticeship – your contract lasts for the duration of the scheme.

During your apprenticeship you’ll be supported with career development, employability training, and networking opportunities to help you take your next step – whether at the BBC or elsewhere in the industry.
