  • LOCATION: London based role with some flexibility - i.e. hybrid working
  • PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: c.£55,000 - £60,000. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights. The successful candidate will also receive £5,441 London Weighting Allowance.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The BBC SSR Group exists to help get programmes made for TV, Radio and On-Line: by finding safe and healthy ways to enable the creation of the distinctive and world-class content that our audiences demand; by ensuring that our people, productions, and premises remain secure and on air. The High Risk and News Safety team is based in London Broadcasting House, delivering specialist safety, security and risk management advice to BBC Divisional heads, senior managers, producers, and staff across a number of departments.

This SSR Specialist – High Risk and News Safety role is a London based position, working in a hybrid way from both London Broadcasting House and Home. You will deliver 2nd line support across the teams’ various portfolios to BBC activity across the globe. You will on occasion be expected to deploy overseas in support of BBC work.

Your Key Responsibilities and Impact

  • High Risk Support: Provide specialist advice and operational support for BBC activities in hostile environments, including threat analysis, risk assessments, and safety logistics.
  • Production & Crisis Safety: Deliver production safety guidance and support crisis management efforts, including deputising for senior safety roles when needed.
  • Policy & Procedure Development: Contribute to the creation and review of security policies, SOPs, and risk documentation; manage threat warnings and safety communications.
  • Training & Equipment Oversight: Assist with BBC High Risk training courses (e.g. HEFAT), advise on safety equipment procurement, and monitor standards.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with government, military, intelligence, and external suppliers; represent the BBC at events and maintain professional networks.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL

  • Hostile Environment Experience: Recent operational background in security or risk management roles, with practical safety support across varied and challenging environments.
  • Security Expertise: Skilled in threat mitigation, security planning, intelligence assessment, and use of modern security equipment.
  • Qualifications: NEBOSH certification (or willingness to obtain); desirable credentials include FREC3/MIRA and security qualifications like CPP, PSP, CBCI, CSyP.
  • Operational Readiness: Able to deploy at short notice and work flexibly to meet urgent operational needs.
  • Specialist Background: Military/government experience with exposure to covert surveillance/close protection training.

DESIRABLE

  • Driving & Maintenance: B driver qualification and basic vehicle maintenance knowledge.
  • A working knowledge of the use of AI in the security and safety environment including systems like Palantir or similar.
  • Military/Government Skills: Skill at arms training, range management, and experience in logistics and equipment care.
  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with satellite communications and ability to produce clear written reports.
  • Qualifications & Memberships: Relevant diplomas (e.g. CSMP, PSP) and professional memberships (e.g. ASyl, MSyl, CSyP).
  • Media & Medical Experience: Experience working with media teams and holding a current first aid qualification (FREC3 to MIRA2).
