CONTRACT TYPE: Permanent

DEPARTMENT: BBC Safety

LOCATION: Hybrid: to be based at one of the Tier 1 offices (London, Cardiff, Birmingham, Salford, Glasgow, Belfast). Some travel required to event/production/office sites.

PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £54,000 - £57,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Purpose of the Role

Provide specialist safety advice across the BBC, influencing and enabling leaders to manage risk within a fast‐paced, creative environment. As a Safety Specialist, you will provide expert guidance, training and insight to inform safe decision‐making, enabling productions and business areas to meet their safety responsibilities while driving continuous improvement and high standards of safety performance. Working independently and in partnership with specialist teams, you will act as a catalyst for positive change, resolving complex issues and delivering strategic safety initiatives that strengthen safety culture and support the BBC's commitment to providing a safe working environment for all staff and partners.

Your Key Responsibilities and Impact

  • Collaborate with the Safety Manager to assist with the execution of the BBC Safety strategy
  • Drive and improve safety performance by coaching leaders, enabling safe decision‐making, and assessing the effectiveness of safety systems and culture
  • Lead cross‐functional projects, engaging stakeholders at all levels to influence policies, frameworks, and safety outcomes
  • Lead and embed safety strategies and standards, including policies and procedures, while supporting leaders to measure performance, learn from insights, and deliver effective safety improvements
  • Influence executive and senior stakeholders, positioning safety as a key driver of organisational performance and guiding decisions aligned with safety priorities
  • Work with senior leaders to ensure compliance with regulations, standards, and industry best practice, while driving continuous improvement across the BBC and wider broadcasting industry
  • Build and maintain trusted internal and external partnerships to co‐create and deliver a purpose‐led, risk‐informed safety strategy

Your Skills and Experience

Essential criteria:

  • Relevant specialist diploma or equivalent (e.g., NEBOSH, NCRQ) and professional institute membership (e.g., CMIOSH, CIEH)
  • Experience in a strategic safety role within a large, complex organisation, with a strong ability to build relationships, influence senior stakeholders, and coach leaders to embed effective safety culture, behaviours, and practices
  • Excellent safety governance, compliance, communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to write compelling and influential reports, training and presentations to a high standard
  • Ability to analyse or investigate and contextualise complex issues, identify key points to be addressed and develop effective, practical and simple plans to resolve problems
  • Extensive knowledge of health and safety legislation, risk management, and recognised frameworks (e.g., HSG65, INDG guidance), with the ability to apply this expertise to deliver practical, proportionate advice

Desired but not required:

  • Recognised leader in safety culture transformation and human performance, with experience influencing at board or senior leadership level
  • Recognised training qualification (e.g. Train the Trainer)
  • Experience supporting media, production or events‐based environments

This role will require regular travel around the UK.
