The Junior Journalist Apprenticeship is ideal for curious individuals passionate about telling stories. If you’re a recent school leaver or are about to finish school and university isn’t for you, this program offers gold standard journalism training with the world’s biggest public service broadcaster. You’ll gain hands‑on experience while working towards the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism and the Creative Media Apprenticeship – setting you up for a future in the industry.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM?

BBC Sport Scotland is the home of the Scotland men’s and women’s national football teams, as well as the Premiership, the Championship, the SWPL, Scottish rugby and a range of other sports. Our coverage extends across digital, television and radio, delivering the best live coverage, analysis, insight and interviews across a range of platforms and audiences. As an apprentice, you will spend time working on each area of our output. This will involve writing and production for online, creating and editing video content for social media, cutting audio and radio production, and television production.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT

• Work alongside sports news teams to develop your journalistic skills, creating and delivering quality content for the BBC.
• Get involved with all sports newsroom activities, such as sourcing and securing compelling contributors or guests, writing briefs for your team, or shooting and editing films.
• Find and create stories for diverse audiences – including coming up with new ideas, carrying out in‑depth research and assisting with interviews.
• Learn from and work with experts in the field at the largest public service broadcaster in the world.

This scheme is aimed at non‑graduates. If you have a degree or the NCTJ diploma in Journalism and want to train as a Journalist at the BBC, we recommend you apply to the Level 6 Journalist Apprenticeship instead.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

• Be 18 years old or over by the time the apprenticeship begins in September 2026.
• Have lived in the UK continuously for the last 3 years prior to the start of the apprenticeship.
• Be legally eligible to work full‑time in the UK for the entire duration of the apprenticeship.
• Not currently be enrolled in another apprenticeship programme, whether with the BBC or another organisation.

To apply for this scheme, you must also:

• Not have completed or be studying for the NCTJ diploma or a journalism qualification at the same level or higher.
• Have achieved English GCSE at Grade 4/C or above; or National 5 (Scotland) at C or Functional Skills Level 2; or equivalent qualification.

To complete the apprenticeship, you must have achieved Core Skills (Scotland) at SCQF Level 5 or 6 in Communication and Numeracy. Core skills will be embedded into learning.

This is a fixed‑term apprenticeship – your contract lasts for the duration of the scheme. The BBC recognises that some people who are applying for a BBC Apprenticeship Scheme may need to relocate to a new location for the role and this might not be possible due to your personal financial constraints. Relocation support is offered to a limited number of apprentices each year and would be considered for this position, subject to meeting the relocation support qualifying criteria.
