PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Reporting to the Head of Operations, you will lead the technical delivery and operation of Outside Broadcasts (OBs), providing on-site leadership and acting as the primary engineering contact to ensure the highest standards of quality, compliance and performance. Working across all Sport Production areas (Video, Audio, Stories and Online), you’ll collaborate with production teams and key partners—including Outside Broadcast suppliers, BBC Technology, Timeline, Dock10 and other third-party providers—to help shape how sport is delivered across an evolving range of platforms.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
- Lead the end-to-end technical delivery of Outside Broadcasts, providing on-site leadership and acting as the primary engineering contact to ensure high standards and successful live output.
- Lead and manage multi-disciplinary technical teams on site, including day-to-day oversight, coaching and performance feedback to ensure effective delivery.
- Oversee technical suppliers, managing performance against KPIs, commercial agreements and budgets, ensuring value for money and alignment with BBC policies.
- Play a key role in planning and delivering major sporting events (including the Olympic Games, World Cup and Wimbledon), supporting complex, high-profile productions.
- Partner closely with production teams to advise on workflows, technical solutions and broadcast planning, assessing feasibility, risks and cost implications.
- Ensure safe and compliant delivery of OBs, leading on risk management and adherence to BBC Health & Safety standards and industry regulations.
- Drive innovation across OB and digital workflows, leading on connectivity and transmission solutions while contributing to long-term technical strategy with BBC Technology.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Strong outside broadcast engineering knowledge with experience of working as a technical producer on site.
- Outstanding operational awareness and judgement.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to effectively lead teams.
- Good knowledge of connectivity systems and differing types of codec choices and their configurations.
- Independent self-starter expecting to travel extensively to OB sites.
