PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
BBC Studios are looking for a new Casting Assistant to support the smooth running of our in‑house Drama Casting department by coordinating auditions, managing actor availability, and facilitating the casting process across multiple high-profile productions. The role ensures Casting Directors and senior staff are equipped with accurate information, well‑organised sessions, and high‑quality audition materials. By engaging with talent networks, conducting outreach, and maintaining strong industry relationships, the Casting Assistant helps discover and champion diverse performers, contributing directly to the creation of outstanding scripted content.
This is a hybrid role based at Roath Lock, Cardiff with a minimum of at least two days in the office, plus ad-hoc as required. Occasional travel to other BBC sites will also be required, including London and other cities across the UK.

You will join a creative, fast‑paced casting department at the heart of producing some of the UK’s most‑loved dramas, such as EastEnders, Casualty and Pobol y Cwm. You’ll work closely with experienced Casting Directors, contribute to shaping on‑screen talent, and gain hands‑on experience across auditions, outreach, and production. This is a collaborative, supportive environment where your ideas are valued, your skills can grow, and your work directly impacts the quality and diversity of BBC storytelling.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
You will support and work closely with the Head of Casting, the Business Managers, and the in‑house Casting Directors on a daily basis. Your duties will include but are not limited to:
- Checking availabilities of actors
- Issuing casting breakdowns via Spotlight and facilitating open casting calls
- Setting up casting sessions and self‑tapes
- Operating cameras and reading in during auditions
- Editing & uploading audition tapes and self‑tapes
- Running casting sessions for children and young performers
- Identifying and communicating changes to scripts and schedules
- Drafting paperwork including contracts and Casting Advice Notes
- Conducting outreach across Wales and the UK to identify talent from underrepresented communities
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- Demonstrable knowledge of, and clear passion for UK Drama Television, Theatre and Film, with extensive knowledge of Welsh acting talent and talent networks across Wales
- Evidenced confidence to run auditions and workshops for both adult and child actors
- Confidence working alongside directors, producers, execs and other senior level staff
- Demonstrable awareness of handling confidential information with tact and sensitivity
- Proficient IT skills and a basic knowledge of editing software
- Experience of working in a position that requires solid communication with a range of stakeholders, with specific experience in professionally challenging, expressing your opinion and negotiating solutions
- Extensive administrative experience and examples of working in environments where there are competing priorities and problems to solve
DESIRABLE CRITERIA:
- Proficiency in Welsh language is desirable, but not essential.
- Experience of casting within any genre
- Experience of working with children and ability to get the best auditions out of them
- Experience of working with agents and building relationships with them
- Experience of talent fee negotiations
