At Bayley & Sage, fresh produce is at the heart of what we do. We are looking for a Fresh Produce Warehouse Assistant to join our team and help ensure our stores receive the best quality fruit and vegetables every day. This is a hands-on role for someone with good knowledge of fresh produce who can confidently assess quality at the market, agree what is suitable for our stores, and then return to the Distribution Centre (DC) to organise and split the orders for each store.

What you'll be doing:

  • Visiting the market to collect and assess fresh produce, making decisions on quality and suitability.
  • Checking deliveries, unloading pallets and reporting any shortages, damages or discrepancies.
  • Returning to the DC and accurately splitting fresh produce orders for our stores.
  • Managing stock in the walk-in chiller and ensuring correct FIFO stock rotation.
  • Carrying out regular quality checks and recording and managing wastage.
  • Communicating with stores about quality issues, shortages, substitutions, additional products and returns.
  • Working closely with the F&V Buyer and suppliers to resolve quality and supply issues.
  • Printing store invoices and supporting the daily order process.
  • Keeping the warehouse and chiller clean, organised and efficient.
  • Sharing daily market updates, including product availability and supply shortages.

About you:

We are looking for someone with strong fresh produce knowledge, excellent communication and influencing skills, and the confidence to make decisions about quality. You will be a practical problem solver who can remain calm in a busy environment and find solutions when things don't go to plan. Good knowledge of systems and Excel is important, as is the ability to work accurately and keep good records.

You will also need:

  • A full UK driving licence.
  • Previous experience working with fresh produce, food retail, wholesale or a similar environment.
  • Good organisational and communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A willingness to obtain a forklift licence, with training provided by Bayley & Sage.
