Communications & Events – Placement Year

A GOOD INTERNSHIP IS NEVER HANDS-OFF.

SHARE YOUR PASSION.

We believe in creating an environment where our interns really can learn by doing during their time with us and where they are given their own areas of responsibilities from the start. That’s why our experts treat you as part of the team from day one, encourage you to bring your own ideas to the table – and give you the opportunity to really show what you can do.

If you’re a bright, energetic and creative student who is seeking an exciting challenge for your placement year, then we have an exceptional opportunity for you. We are looking for enthusiastic and passionate people to join a busy communications team based at our Hams Hall engine manufacturing plant (near Birmingham), working across communications and events.

BMW Group Plant Hams Hall is a modern, state-of-the-art engine manufacturing facility, located not far from Birmingham, UK. The plant, employing over 1,000 people, plays a key role in BMW Group’s manufacture of the latest generation of high-tech engines and the precision machining of key engine components.

Communication to our employees and key stakeholders is central to our success and this placement is a fantastic chance to develop your career in communications, working for the world’s leading premium automotive manufacturer.
What awaits you?

In this role you will have your own tasks and projects as well as supporting the communications manager(s) in their daily work.

  • There are plenty of topics and stories you will get involved with to create and push out engaging content to employees. This will be across a range of media channels such as the intranet, employee app and digital signage. You will also take ownership for managing some of these channels.
  • Supporting the communications manager and the wider UK communications team, you will work on generating plant information and story ideas to support our engagement and dialogue with external stakeholders.
  • Either taking the lead or in a supporting role, you will get involved in the planning, organisation and execution of events and visits, large and small, for a variety of audiences.
  • Traditionally, our interns always take the lead on working with our house charity to bring our partnership to life, creating awareness, enthusing engagement among our workforce and organising fundraising events.
  • Improving and innovating is important, so you will be contributing to the further development of how we do things. This could be rolling out new initiatives, improving or introducing new communication channels and ensuring we are up to date with the latest BMW Group standards.
  • The everyday stuff is just as important, so you will support the department in keeping on top of our annual planner, collating communication measures for reporting, photo archiving, escorting photographers and film crews, updating plant information and a little admin here and there to keep everything in good shape!
  • No two days will be the same and although office-based, your placement will include a fair proportion of your time spent on the shop floor liaising with people working at all levels within the factory. In order to support the team, you will be asked to be flexible with your working hours and from time-to-time there may be travel required to other BMW Group sites in the UK.

What should you bring along?

  • To be considered for this role you’ll need to be passionate about communicating and engaging with people and be able to demonstrate this clearly through your interests and achievements.
  • Studying towards a degree in business studies, marketing, media, or communications – at 2.2 level or above.
  • You will need to have excellent written and spoken English skills and the ability to communicate and build relationships at all levels is essential.
  • An awareness of, and interest in, current affairs, as well as an eye for what makes a good story will help you make a strong contribution to the team.
  • You must be comfortable using and learning about a range of IT software and content management systems.
  • Basic photography and photo editing are all part of the role and further digital media skills would enhance what you bring to the table.
  • You will need to be highly organised and comfortable working in a manufacturing environment.

We are a small team, so above all you must be flexible, proactive and resilient with a ‘hands on’ approach and a positive ‘can-do’ attitude. A valid driving licence and the ability to reach the plant around flexible working hours is essential.

What can you look forward to?

  • Great Pay – A competitive annual salary of £26,600, 26 days holiday per annum (pro rata to your contract) and an attractive pension scheme.
  • Rewarding Work-Life Balance – Contracted working hours are 39 hours a week, with a half day on a Friday, helping you develop a fulfilling work-life balance.
  • Exciting Additional Benefits – You will have the opportunity to enjoy other employee benefits, including an on-site gym, a subsidised on-site restaurant and access to our Advantages scheme which gives you a range of offers and discounts.

What do you need to do now?

If you apply, the next stages of the recruiting process include online testing, an in person assessment centre and then a virtual interview with the hiring manager.

Please note:

To be eligible for this position, you must be returning to your studies, for a minimum of 6 months, after completion of this placement. You must be able to provide proof of your legal right to work in the UK.

We are committed to promoting equal opportunities in employment and job applicants will receive equal treatment regardless of disability, age, gender reassignment, marital or civil partner status, pregnancy or maternity, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion or belief, gender, sex or sexual orientation.
