The Counsel for the Northern Cluster (UK and Northern Ireland, Ireland and the Nordics) is responsible for providing legal advice and counsel to the organization on all legal affairs within the region and selected business segments. The role reports to the Deputy General Counsel responsible for International Developed Markets and involves high‑level interactions with business and functional leaders throughout Western Europe.

Responsibilities

  • Advises the Company on corporate, commercial, M&A, regulatory, antitrust, public procurement, compliance, IP and other legal issues relating to the UK/Northern Ireland, Ireland and the Nordics cluster.
  • Advise the Company on legal/contractual rights and responsibilities for high risk/profile contracts.
  • Proactively identify legal risks for high risk/profile issues and develop or approve an action plan.
  • Keep abreast of all legal, legislative, and regulatory developments, apprise senior management in a timely manner, and ensure full compliance with new laws, regulations or policy matters.
  • Train the Company on legal topics and cascade training and information throughout the organization, acting as a strategic partner for commercial teams to limit risk and suggest solutions for better practices regarding structure, systems, and delivery of services.
  • Establish strong relationships with internal and external constituents; manage relationships with key outside legal firms.
  • Collaborate within Legal, including Ethics and Compliance and Privacy, to ensure effective and efficient delivery of legal resources.

Qualifications

  • Fluent in English; fluency in any other EMEA language preferred.
  • Strong understanding of local laws and regulations of countries in the cluster.
  • Familiarity with regulations related to medical devices and pharmaceuticals; prior experience advising on MHRA matters strongly preferred.
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, with the ability to provide practical and commercially‑focused legal advice.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to provide creative and innovative legal solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a high level of initiative and proactivity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Presence in the UK office (Reading) at least 3 days per week.
  • Qualified lawyer with a degree in Law (LL.B or equivalent) and a postgraduate degree in Law (LL.M or equivalent).
  • Admitted to practice law in the UK.
  • At least 7 years of experience as a legal counsel or lawyer, preferably in a multinational company or law firm.
