About the role: This role sits within the Engineering team, with a focus on mechanical design. You will lead the mechanical design and development of outdoor digital displays from concept through to production, taking ownership of technical decision-making and working collaboratively with a cross-functional team spanning electrical engineering, production, service and procurement. This is a hands‑on senior role with real scope — you will be designing products that operate in demanding real‑world environments, mentoring junior engineers, and contributing to the continuous improvement of engineering processes. This is a four‑day working week role — you will work Monday to Thursday and be paid for five days.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the mechanical design and development of robust outdoor digital displays from concept to production.
- Take ownership of projects, driving technical decision‑making and contributing to design reviews.
- Design with manufacturability (DFM), cost efficiency, thermal performance, ingress protection (IP ratings) and serviceability in mind.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders and external suppliers to ensure designs meet real‑world requirements, costs and timelines.
- Conduct structural and thermal analysis to ensure mechanical integrity and compliance with environmental standards, including wind loading and heat dissipation.
- Assemble and modify prototypes, and carry out testing and validation of new designs.
- Create detailed 3D CAD models, technical drawings and BOMs using SolidWorks and PDM.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers.
- Contribute to continuous improvement across engineering processes.
About you: We welcome applications from candidates with a strong background in mechanical design, particularly those with experience in outdoor or ruggedised products. We value transferable skills and a genuine interest in well‑engineered, reliable products.
Essential:
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Proven experience in a mechanical design role, ideally within outdoor electronics, enclosures or display systems.
- Strong proficiency in CAD, with SolidWorks preferred.
- Deep understanding of sheet metal design and fabrication.
- Comfortable using workshop tools and equipment to build, adapt and test prototypes.
- Strong communication skills and a proactive, collaborative approach to problem solving.
- Able to balance creative thinking with practical manufacturing constraints.
Desirable:
- Experience designing products to meet IP ratings (e.g. IP65), thermal and solar load constraints, and mechanical strength standards.
- Familiarity with simulation tools such as FEA or CFD.
- Exposure to PDM processes.
- Basic knowledge of electrical systems.
What is in it for you?
- Competitive Salary.
- 25 days plus bank holidays.
- Flexible working.
- Bonus scheme based on company and individual targets.
- Standard workplace pension – matched at 5%.
- Healthcare Cash Plan and peripheral benefits.
- Employee Assistant Programme.
- Free parking with electric charging points.
