Job purpose
As a Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Computer Science, the postholder will:
- Design and deliver content, and support and assess learning in Computer Science;
- Assist with curriculum planning and development;
- Contribute to academic research, knowledge exchange, and professional practice within the school and institution;
- Draw on existing networks and experience to facilitate third party relationships and industry insight opportunities.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- To design and deliver teaching material and assess learners within Computer Science, and, where appropriate, in related areas in pursuit of the academic strategy of the School of Design.
- To contribute to pedagogical innovation, curriculum development and planning within the School in support of the institution’s teaching and learning strategy.
- To inform and enhance curriculum design and improve student experience.
- To engage in relevant research and scholarly activity in support of the University’s research and knowledge exchange strategy.
- To seek external funding for this activity and help develop ideas for new revenue streams.
- To participate in and contribute to internal/external networks, engage with the relevant academic communities and build productive relationships with industrial bodies, professional associations, employers and practitioners as appropriate.
- To ensure that responsibilities identified within internal processes, QAA codes of practice, HEFCE guidelines, etc. are robustly met.
- To undertake administrative duties associated with the normal planning and operational procedures of the department and school.
- To undertake recruitment, publicity and promotional activities in the interest of the School and University.
- To contribute to the range of other professional responsibilities shared by tutors within the School.
- Where appropriate, to mentor colleagues with less experience, advising on their personal development.
- To carry out any other duties commensurate with the grade and scope of the post.

Qualifications and experience
Essential:
- A good postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline
- Recent, successful experience of university level teaching in a relevant discipline
- A track record or demonstrable potential in research, knowledge exchange or professional practice – particularly where this has clearly enriched your teaching, underpinned curricular developments and/or enhanced the student experience
Desirable:
- A research degree in a relevant discipline
- Course management experience
- Course development experience
- Recent experience of postgraduate level teaching and/or supervision in a relevant discipline
- A professional qualification in a field of computing (e.g. Cisco, ITIL, BCS, Google, Microsoft certification)
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy
Skills and Knowledge
Essential:
- Broad and extensive knowledge and experience in Computer Science
- An excellent teacher with demonstrable interest in pedagogic innovation
- A good command of HE quality assurance processes
- Proven problem solving skills
- Excellent ICT skills including e-learning tools
Desirable:
- Knowledge and demonstrable skills in the fields of Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Embedded Systems, Physical Computing, or Computer Graphics.
- Practical software development experience in multiple modern programming languages, including C++, C#, Python, and JavaScript.
- Established and open links within the industry that may benefit the student experience
- A good understanding of the changing HE landscape and its relevance to the subject area, the School and the University
