The Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering requires a highly skilled, adaptable, and self‑motivated engineer to provide technical support to the departmental Mechanical Services workshop. The successful applicant will have demonstrable experience in machining and manufacturing parts using a variety of conventional and CNC machine tools. They will provide expert technical support to staff and students across the department and faculty with the specification, design and manufacture of bespoke mechanical systems, and the repair, maintenance and modification of new and existing experimental rigs and components.

The Technical Specialist will bring expert mechanical systems knowledge to inform and influence the effective design and manufacture of new rigs and the adaptation of existing rigs. They will also act as custodian of laboratories and workshops containing specialist research equipment and contribute to the management of health and safety in these spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support and expertise in machining, manufacturing, and maintenance of experimental rigs;
  • Advise on design, fabrication and modification of bespoke mechanical systems;
  • Manage laboratory and workshop safety;
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations;
  • Support staff and student projects.

Qualifications

  • Recognised toolroom/technician or mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent.
  • Minimum of a City and Guilds qualification (or equivalent).
  • Substantial experience working in an engineering machine shop or toolroom with CNC and conventional machine tools and associated equipment.
  • Knowledge and experience of Computer‑Aided Design (CAD) and CNC machine tool programming is an advantage; training will be provided if necessary.

Working Hours

Full time, 36.5 hours per week, full time attendance on campus; hybrid and home working are not applicable.
