In the Design & Projects Team, engineers and project staff work to turn policy into projects that change how people move – creating safer crossings and junctions for all users, building new walking and inclusive wheeling routes, improved facilities for bus users, and putting in place measures so sustainable travel becomes the easy, natural choice. About the Role
Working alongside Senior Engineers, this role supports the planning, design, supervision and delivery of the LATS (Local Active Travel and Safety) programme. You will help turn policy ambitions into well-designed, buildable projects that enable safer and more sustainable travel for residents.
About You
These roles sit at the heart of the Council’s commitment to tackling the Climate and Ecological Emergency and achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. We are looking for people who are passionate about designing streets and places that prioritise active and sustainable travel.
Qualifications
- Strong experience in the design and delivery of active travel and highway schemes with a good knowledge of Highway Design Standards and Guidance (including TSRGD / Traffic Signs Manual, LTN 1/20, DMRB and Manual for Streets 2).
- Proven ability in the delivery of active travel and highway schemes to programme and within budget.
- An understanding of the component parts of highway contracts (Specification, Bills of Quantities, Method of Measurement).
- Experience of all stages of highway work from feasibility studies through to site supervision.
- Proven ability in producing and reviewing detailed engineering designs and drawings using AutoCAD.
- Understanding of data collection, analysis and interpretation (e.g. traffic counts, speed surveys).
- An understanding of health and safety legislation, including CDM.
- Understanding of the Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process and statutory consultation procedures.
- Understanding of road safety audits.
- Carrying out site visits and surveys.
- Self-motivated to work towards professional accreditation (IHE, ICE, CIHT).
