We are seeking a skilled and motivated Gallery Technician to join our Heritage Services team. This is a practical, hands‑on role supporting the installation and care of exhibitions and collections across our museums and galleries and providing building and facilities maintenance support.
You will work closely with the Senior Curator, maintenance team, collections team and artists to ensure that artworks and displays are installed safely, presented to a high standard, and cared for in line with museum best practice. The role also involves supporting public programmes, maintaining workshop and AV equipment, and contributing to the smooth running of our buildings and events.
About The Role
- Installing and deinstalling exhibitions, including 2D, 3D and AV works
- Preparing gallery spaces, including layout planning, decoration, and lighting
- Constructing and maintaining exhibition furniture, plinths, and bespoke joinery
- Handling, packing, and transporting artworks in accordance with conservation standards
- Supporting collections care, including storage, rehanging, and condition reporting
- Assisting with gallery events, school and community activities, and building maintenance
- Maintaining tools, workshop equipment, and AV systems
- Liaising with artists, contractors, and couriers to support exhibition delivery
About You
- NVQ Level 3 in Bench Joinery or equivalent qualification
- Experience working with fine art and/or decorative arts collections
- A strong track record of installing both historic and contemporary exhibitions
- Knowledge of Accredited Museum and GIS standards for handling and conservation
- Proficiency in using workshop tools (e.g. jigsaw, bandsaw, router, drills)
- Experience in picture framing and using a variety of hanging systems
- A collaborative, flexible approach and excellent attention to detail
