British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for a Scientist II Analytical in Southampton.

Key Objectives and Expectations:

  • Work in partnership with New Categories product development and Packaging teams, Analytical Development and Quality Assurance to design analytical solutions and deliver timely and reliable data that enable robust technical decision-making.
  • The role leads analytical engagement with members of New Categories product development and Packaging teams to evaluate technical problems, develop analytical solutions and lead analytical delivery.
  • Provides leadership of analytical method optimisation, validation, product analysis and detailed technical interpretation to guide decision-making in product and technology development.

Your Key Responsibilities Will Include:

  • Provides analytical science leadership in scoping and technical discussions with project team members, giving appropriate scientific guidance and evaluating technical requirements.
  • Provides analytical science leadership in designing, optimising and validating fit for purpose test methods and quality control measures.
  • Provides scientific supervision to scientists and technicians in the conduct of their work, including review of study plans, data and reports.
  • Leads peers in the identification, analysis and resolution of scientific problems.
  • Communicates scientific issues and proposals for their resolution to senior scientists, collaborators and project teams.
  • Raises unresolved technical issues to next level of scientific management.
  • Supervises the scientific integrity of studies and projects, keeping partners and management informed.
  • Identifies and investigates departures from science plan or agreed technical standards, proposing appropriate remedial actions.
  • Leads the training and technical/professional development of scientific staff to ensure that they have the necessary knowledge and practical capability to deliver to the required standard and to continue in their development.
  • Leads the structured evaluation of technologies to support proposals for strategic capability development.
  • Engages pro-actively with internal and external scientific peers to develop best technical practice, to find opportunities for collaborative research and to communicate results of research, including peer review publications.

Experience Required:

  • Detailed knowledge and hands-on application of best technical practice, analytical method development and validation for measurement of chemical constituents of food, environmental, tobacco and/or consumer products.
  • Hands-on expertise in the operation and troubleshooting of instrumental analysis techniques with associated high-level problem-solving skills.
  • Experience of working in an ISO 17025 accredited and/or GLP compliant laboratory.

Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required:

  • Integrated member of R&S project teams and cross-functional teams provide expert input on analytical science and evaluation of resulting scientific data.
  • Evidence of proficiency in the effective application of formal and informal management, project and business tools and processes.
  • Evidence of appropriate leadership, coaching, development and technical governance to ensure that all scientific output is consistently of the required integrity.

Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required:

  • Professional/academic achievement in Chemistry or a relevant physical science at first degree (e.g. BSc) level.
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development and current technical awareness in Analytical Chemistry.

Beneficial:

  • Preference will be given to candidates who are active members of a relevant professional body such as the Royal Society of Chemistry.
  • A strong record of communication of research, including peer reviewed publications, is advantageous.
  • Evidence of exploring and implementing new or alternative analytical solutions in a research and development environment.

Qualifying Questions for Applicants:

  • Do you have extensive knowledge of the analysis of chemical components of foods, pharmaceuticals, tobacco or other similar products?
  • Have you worked in an ISO 17025 accredited or GLP compliant laboratory for more than one year?
  • Do you have knowledge of nicotine and tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products?
