We are seeking a motivated and commercially aware Senior Planning Officer to play a key role in delivering major development schemes, negotiating significant planning obligations, and supporting the Council's strategic growth ambitions.
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of development management, focusing on complex and high-value planning applications, including those of corporate priority.
You will:
- Lead on the assessment and determination of complex pre-applications, planning applications, and appeals
- Support the delivery of major development sites across the district
- Negotiate planning obligations and secure maximum community benefits
- Promote and manage Planning Performance Agreements (PPAs)
- Represent the Council at Planning Committee, hearings, and Public Inquiries
- Act as an expert witness at appeals where required
- Build strong relationships with developers, agents, Members, and stakeholders
- Contribute to service improvement and innovation across the Planning function
- Support and mentor junior staff and contribute to training and development
Qualifications
We are looking for a confident and capable planner with strong technical expertise and excellent communication skills.
- Degree or postgraduate qualification in Town Planning or a related discipline
- Chartered membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. RTPI)
- Extensive knowledge of the planning application process and legislative framework
- Proven experience of assessing and determining major planning applications
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage a complex workload
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly
- A proactive, flexible, and solutions-focused approach to work
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
