General Manager – Basrah Lounge
Job Type: Full-time. Schedule: Flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
Basrah Lounge is looking for an experienced, confident and hands-on General Manager to oversee the daily operation of our busy restaurant and lounge.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the team, maintaining excellent customer service, managing staff performance and ensuring the venue operates smoothly, efficiently and to a consistently high standard.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day running of the restaurant and lounge.
- Lead, support and motivate front-of-house, bar and kitchen teams.
- Create and manage weekly staff rotas using the Deputy app.
- Monitor employee attendance, lateness, breaks, availability and working hours.
- Approve timesheets and ensure staff hours are recorded accurately.
- Ensure each shift is appropriately staffed according to business needs.
- Recruit, train and onboard new employees.
- Conduct staff meetings, performance reviews and disciplinary procedures when required.
- Set clear expectations and ensure all team members follow company policies.
- Maintain excellent standards of customer service.
- Handle customer enquiries, complaints and special requests professionally.
- Oversee table bookings, events and busy service periods.
- Monitor stock levels and coordinate ordering with suppliers.
- Reduce unnecessary waste and control operational costs.
- Oversee cash handling, tills, end-of-day reports and banking procedures.
- Monitor sales performance and help achieve business targets.
- Ensure the venue remains clean, organised and presentable.
- Carry out regular checks of the restaurant, kitchen, toilets and customer areas.
- Ensure compliance with food hygiene, health and safety, licensing and fire-safety requirements.
- Work closely with the owners and provide regular updates on staffing, sales, customer feedback and operational issues.
- Step in and support the team during busy periods when required.
- Identify ways to improve service, efficiency and the overall customer experience.
Skills and Experience
- Previous experience as a General Manager, Restaurant Manager or in a similar senior hospitality role.
- Strong leadership and people-management skills.
- Experience creating rotas and managing staff through Deputy or a similar workforce-management system.
- Excellent communication and customer-service skills.
- Confident handling complaints and resolving problems calmly.
- Good understanding of stock control, labour costs, cash handling and sales targets.
- Knowledge of food hygiene, health and safety and licensing requirements.
- Highly organised, reliable and able to work under pressure.
- Comfortable managing a busy restaurant and lounge environment.
- Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
- A hands-on management style and willingness to support all areas of the business.
