Job overview

We have a fantastic opportunity for an experienced enthusiastic individual to lead our infant feeding service at Whipps Cross Hospital in delivering high quality services to our clients and families.

The post-holder is expected to have a BSc or be working towards a BSc (completion within 6 months) or have an Infant feeding qualification from a voluntary organisation (BfN, NCT, ABM, LLL tutor or experienced counsellor).

NLS Course (or equivalent) with over 2 years’ experience.

You will have sound management skills, resilience, and the ability to meet the demands of a busy clinical service.

In this role, you will be expected to demonstrate a passion for promoting evidence-based practice, offer women continuity of care, and support women in every part of their infant feeding journey.

Main duties of the job

To provide management and leadership for infant feeding services within the hospital and community. As the expert lead for infant feeding, provide support and organise training to ensure that all staff and mothers at the Whipps Cross hospital and Community Midwifery services are supported with feeding their baby. This starts in the antenatal period and continues in the community for as long as families seek support with feeding their babies. As the Baby Friendly lead, the candidate will work with midwives in the attainment of UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) level 3, networking with both internal and external stakeholders.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • BSc or working towards BSc within 12 months
  • Substantive experience in infant feeding
  • Registered Midwife
  • Management training
  • Train the Trainer course
  • Infant feeding qualification from a voluntary organisation
  • (BfN, NCT, ABM, LLL tutor or experienced counsellor) NLS Course (or equivalent)

Experience

  • Substantial time working as a Breastfeeding/Baby Feeding specialist or equivalent
  • Facilitating training for others in breastfeeding management
  • Experience of managing/leading a mother support service or coordinating Baby Friendly in a setting

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Baby Friendly initiative standards
  • Knowledge of counselling skills
  • Knowledge of teaching and learning

Skills

  • Ability to work and communicate as part of the multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to teach and facilitate in a variety of settings with different groups of staff and parents
  • Ability to support mothers to feed their babies in a non-judgemental, empathetic, and mother-centred way
  • Ability to prioritise in order to meet deadlines when writing reports
  • Effectively carries out tasks related to audit and evaluating services

Management

  • Ability to work with clinical staff and women
  • Ability to plan, allocate and supervise others
  • Ability to deal with operational issues
  • Ability to deliver on the key performance indicators related to infant feeding

Other

  • Able to evaluate and analyse results of audit in order to improve the service
  • Computer literacy including using an excel spreadsheet
