We are seeking an experienced, compassionate and motivated midwife to join the Royal London Hospital as a Fetal Wellbeing Midwife (Band 7) on a part-time, fixed-term basis. This specialist role provides expert clinical leadership in fetal wellbeing and fetal monitoring, supporting safe, evidence-based and equitable care for women and birthing people. The postholder will work closely with midwifery, obstetric, neonatal, governance and education teams to strengthen CTG interpretation, promote timely escalation, and enhance learning from incidents in line with national guidance. Main duties of the job
- The Fetal Wellbeing Midwife will provide expert leadership and support in all aspects of fetal monitoring, with a strong focus on clinical practice, staff competence, quality assurance, and governance.
- The role includes offering expert clinical input for CTG interpretation and fetal wellbeing assessment across intrapartum areas, acting as a senior point of escalation for complex or concerning CTG patterns, and ensuring timely multidisciplinary review and decision-making.
- The post-holder will support the ongoing implementation of Trust fetal monitoring standards, including the Royal London hourly CTG assessment process and "fresh eyes" reviews.
- A key aspect of the role involves promoting physiological interpretation of CTGs alongside NICE categorisation, taking into account the clinical context and stage of labour.
- The Fetal Wellbeing Midwife will lead and contribute to mandatory fetal monitoring training and annual competency assessments for both midwifery and medical staff.
- They will identify colleagues requiring additional support, coordinating targeted remediation, supervision, and follow-up where needed.
- The role also includes contributing to audit, quality improvement initiatives, incident reviews, and learning responses where fetal monitoring has been a factor, as well as supporting wider assurance reporting through governance structures.

- Neonatal Advanced Life Support
- Teaching in Clinical Practice or Equivalent
- Experience as a labour ward / triage band 7 or 3 years experience as a band 6 in a high-risk labour ward
- Some experience of working in low-risk unit with Intermittent auscultation and management of Fetal heart
- Experience in implementing and evaluating change in clinical practice.
- Ability to undertake and apply audit and evidence to practice.
- Experience of clinical teaching for staff and/or students in practice
- Demonstrates expert knowledge of CTG interpretation and management
- Good written and spoken English.
- A comprehensive understanding of own development and training needs
- A clear understanding and application of the principles of professional accountability and confidentiality
- Ability to demonstrate expertise towards teaching and sharing knowledge.
- Ability to provide care to women before, during and following birth.
- Proven Competency in: Obstetric emergencies, suturing, cannulation, medicines management & Water Birth
- Ability to assess competency of clinical skills in others e.g. obstetric emergencies, suturing, cannulation & water birth
- Ability to recognise and analyse complex situations and or deviation from normal and act upon it.
- Ability to deal with issues of Risk management within the clinical context.
- Ability to organise, prioritise and coordinate own work.
- Experience of leadership and teaching and mentoring learners.
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
