We are inviting applications to recruit two substantive consultants in Neonatology.

They will be joining a pro-active team with an excellent clinical reputation in providing a range of Neonatal services.

The consultant team delivers a high-quality service and uses their knowledge and experience to lead and influence the development of neonatal services at the Royal London Hospital.

We are looking for applicants who can lead and develop innovative models of care which benefit the infants and their families. We anticipate that the successful applicants will be part of a strong team and complement the team in delivering high-quality care to an extremely vulnerable group of patients and their families.

The post is primarily based on the NICU at Royal London with occasional cross cover of the Neonatal Transfer service. The pan London Neonatal Transfer Service is based at the Royal London providing both emergency and elective transfers within London and the South East.

Main duties of the job

Neonatal Consultants work as a team, and each Neonatal Consultant shall be responsible for the daytime management of all babies in the medical and surgical intensive care nurseries for 3 weeks in each 10 weeks of the full rota.

The daytime clinical cover for the intensive care area is provided over 2-week blocks and includes split weekend cover (Saturday the first weekend, Friday and Sunday the next). At weekends, the consultant is expected to be on-site until 10pm.

The weekend nights after 10 pm may be covered non-resident from home, with an expectation for the consultant to readily attend to the NICU, with a return to site within 30 minutes, in case of emergencies. A further 1-week block covering special care, transitional care, postnatal wards, and the labour ward. This week does not include any night on-call duties.

During their periods covering the intensive care, special care, and transitional care areas, the responsible Consultant is expected to conduct daily ward rounds and always be available for help, advice, and discussion with staff or parents. The working weeknight on-call commitments will be a 1 in 10 rota, covering the NICU, labour ward, and transitional care unit.

Job responsibilities

  1. The administration and development of neonatal intensive, high dependency, and special care on the Royal London Hospital NICU as well as transitional care on the postnatal wards.
  2. Supervision, training, and support of junior medical staff in the care of sick babies on the neonatal unit and postnatal wards, and in the resuscitation and stabilisation of babies on the labour ward and in theatres.
  3. Supporting the neonatal surgical service.
  4. Carrying out outpatient clinics as per weekly rota. One of these would be the general neonatal follow-up clinic, and the other could be a special interest clinic.
  5. Available to offer advice to referring paediatricians and neonatologists, and if required, occasionally visit babies in outlying units particularly in the context of hospitals within the network.
  6. Being available to advise local GPs, Health Visitors, and midwives in matters of baby care. Supporting staff and parents.

Qualifications
Essential

  • Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (MRCPCH) or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration. Registration on the Specialist Register and CCT in Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine) equivalent. Note: CESR applicants must be on the specialist register at the point of application.
  • The applicant should be able to produce evidence that he/she is within 6 months of CCT date and is expected to achieve a Completion Certificate of Training.
  • Able to demonstrate recent experience and practice in neonatal medicine as a sub-specialist

Desirable

  • MD, MSc, PhD or equivalent higher degree

  • Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
