Job Title: Consultant in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia Band: 10PA
Applicants are invited to apply for a Consultant post in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia. It is envisaged that he or she will join the Perioperative Medicine (POM) Acute Pain team at Barts Heart Centre.
In October 2014, NHS England approved the case for change for the way that specialist cardiovascular services are provided across north and east London, enabling the creation of the Barts Heart Centre. The Barts Heart Centre was created by combining the services and staff from the London Chest Hospital and UCLH\’s The Heart Hospital, along with those already running at St Bartholomew\’s. It is the largest specialist cardiovascular centre in the country, bringing together a wide range of expertise in clinical care, research and education for cardiovascular conditions.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for enthusiastic and motivated individuals to join the existing team of 48 anaesthetists and intensivists who provide cardiothoracic and general anaesthesia and critical care. The successful applicant should be able to demonstrate wide experience with higher specialist training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and excellent TOE skills.

Job responsibilities
The purpose of the role is to provide Anaesthesia to patients undergoing Cardiothoracic Surgery, and provide the Peri-Operative care for those patients during their stay in hospital.
Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC, hold a license to practise and be on the Specialist Register for Anaesthesia or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview

- GMC Registration
- CCT in anaesthesia or, if in training within 6 months of CCT
- FRCA or equivalent

- ALS/CALS
Special Knowledge/Abilities and/or Experience
Essential
- Proficient in relevant procedures such as vascular access, fibreoptic bronchoscopy
- Advanced transoesophageal echocardiography skills
- Higher training in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care, at least 6 Months
- Training and experience in cardiac critical care
- Experience in the perioperative care of patients including pain management
- Experience in anaesthetising patients for complex Aortovascular and Endovascular surgery
Desirable
- Sound understanding of training relationships within the programme
- Ability to promote equality of opportunity in all aspects of medical education
- Experience working across boundaries (e.g. between specialties, local and national education providers and across professional groups)
- TOE/TTE Accreditation
- Training in Acute Pain management
