Job overview

We welcome applications for a Consultant Clinical Scientist post in the Department of Clinical Biochemistry, Barts Health, East & South East London Pathology Partnership.
This is a new post to support our expanding service and you will join an experienced team of 3 Consultants and 7 Clinical Scientists, together with 3 STPs and 1 HSST.
You will be based at the Royal London Hospital but have consultant responsibility for the services we provide for Homerton University Hospital.
We are advertising a part-time post but are happy to discuss flexible working. Ideally the post holder would have completed Fellowship Examination of The Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath). However, applications are welcomed from candidates in the final stages of completion of part 2 examination.

Main duties of the job

The department is one of the largest in the UK, with specialist services including LC-MS/MS, HPLC, atomic absorption and proteins. We provide clinical and technical POCT support across our partnership trusts. We serve specialist clinical services across Barts Health, which has the largest cardiovascular centre in the UK, the second largest cancer centre in London, one of the largest children’s hospitals in the UK and leading endocrinology, stroke and renal units. We also have strong links with adult and paediatric endocrine, nutrition and ICU teams. These links afford ample opportunity for collaborative research and development and clinical liaison. The department is an accredited training centre for STPs and HSSTs.

We are looking for a dynamic and ambitious Clinical Scientist to join us in further developing the service. You will join an experienced team of 3 Consultants and 8 Clinical Scientists. Ideally the post holder would have completed Fellowship Examinations of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath). However, applications are welcomed from candidates in the final stages of completion of part 2 examination.

The post holder will be involved in the oversight of Homerton Essential Services Laboratory (ESL) but will be involved in the specialist areas of the laboratory including specialist proteins, LC-MS/MS, HPLC, trace elements and point of care testing. You will be based at the Royal London hub with regular travel to the spoke sites as required.

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.

The post is based on the Royal London Hospital site, directly opposite Whitechapel station, which is served by the district, Hammersmith & City, overground and Elizabeth lines. Whitechapel is a vibrant, multicultural district in the East End.

Qualifications

  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in Clinical Biochemistry
  • FRCPath (by examination) or evidence of equivalent qualification in Clinical Biochemistry or within final stage of completion of part 2 examination
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
  • PhD in a relevant subject

Experience

  • Thorough and broad training and experience in clinical biochemistry including POCT
  • Experience of taking responsibility for complex aspects of service delivery and development without direct supervision
  • Experience of research and development and evidence of publications and presentations on topics related to clinical biochemistry
  • Completion of audits that have contributed to improvements in clinical practice
  • Experience in UKAS /ISO 15189
  • Experience of teaching biochemistry topics to a wide range of audiences

Skills and Knowledge

  • In depth expertise in one or more specialist analytical areas Knowledge of evidence-based practice
  • Broad range of IT skills
  • Ability to work independently, consulting with colleagues where necessary
  • To have attained status as a national or international expert or advisor
