St. Bartholomew's Hospital is looking to recruit a Healthcare Support Worker (HCA) Band 3 who will work in Outpatients. This post is open to individuals who are both experienced Healthcare Support Workers as well as attracting individuals who are new to care. You will receive support to complete the Band 3 competencies & progress into a Band 3 role within 6 months upon successful completion of all required competencies; until then, you will be placed at a Band 2 salary. We are looking for compassionate & motivated individuals who are passionate about delivering high-quality, person-centred care in a hospital setting.

The role involves undertaking a range of delegated clinical tasks, such as:

  • Assisting with personal care and mobility
  • Supporting patients' nutritional & hydration needs
  • Undertaking limited range of delegated duties (e.g. taking blood pressure, recording ECG, MRSA screening)
  • Simple wound dressings

Strong teamworking & communication skills are essential to ensure the comfort, wellbeing, & safety of our patients. An excellent communicator, they have experience of working in a team, to ensure the comfort, wellbeing and safety of our patients.

Main duties of the job:

The post holder will be an integral part of the nursing team actively taking part in meeting the needs of patients and of the service in accordance with agreed standards under direct supervision of the registered nurse. The post holder will continue to develop essential competencies though training and practice to ensure safety and quality are the priority.

Person Specification:

Qualifications:
  • Completion of Care Certificate or equivalent.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills (English and Maths GCSEs or equivalent.)
  • Evidence of ongoing personal development.
  • Level 2 support worker Apprenticeship.
Experience:
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a clinical healthcare setting.
  • Experience of dealing with the public.
Skills:
  • Evidence of providing high quality care.
  • To be aware of incident reporting systems and escalation processes.
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of good organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated to work under minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Basic keyboard/ computer skills (e.g. ability to enter patient data onto computer records).
  • Contributes to updating patient records.
  • To always protect and maintain patient confidentiality and follow information governance policies and procedures.
  • Prepared to undertake further training to develop the necessary competencies and skills.
  • Depending on specific service arrangements, to supervise and train more junior staff.
Knowledge:
  • Awareness of health and safety at work (e.g: manual handling skills, infection control measures).
  • Ability to collect and exchange factual information and data to the multidisciplinary team and ensure data accuracy.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
