This role involves performing routine husbandry and supporting breeding programmes while ensuring strict compliance with regulatory standards, including the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 and Home Office Codes of Practice. You will play a key role in maintaining animal welfare, biosecurity standards, and the smooth operation of the animal facility.
What will you be doing?
- Perform daily animal husbandry duties, including feeding, watering, cleaning, handling, and health observations.
- Ensure correct identification and labelling of cages and housing.
- Support animal breeding programmes, including birthing, weaning, sexing, counting, and weighing animals.
- Carry out cleaning and maintenance of animal rooms, equipment, and associated areas.
- Complete departmental records such as production data, stock reports, and daily logs.
- Identify and report any concerns relating to animal welfare or facility conditions.
- Assist with receiving and dispatching animals and supplies while maintaining barrier integrity.
- Support the training of new staff members where required.
Requirements
- Minimum 12 months’ experience in animal husbandry or a similar environment.
- Level 2 Diploma in Animal Management or equivalent qualification.
- Minimum 5 GCSEs (including English and Mathematics) or equivalent.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high welfare standards.
- Good communication skills and ability to work effectively within a team.
Additional Information
- Weekend and occasional out-of-hours work may be required.
- The role requires working in a controlled animal unit environment and following strict health and safety procedures.
- A valid driving licence may be required due to site location.
