Job purpose

To provide safe, friendly and person-centred support to a young person with autism who is non-verbal, enabling him to access the local community, enjoy activities and experiences that interest him, and maintain routines that support his wellbeing. The role will focus on promoting his safety, comfort and enjoyment while providing his family with a short period of respite.

About the employer

The employer is a happy and cheerful young person with autism who is non-verbal. He has a fun personality, enjoys exploring his surroundings and particularly loves spending time outdoors.

He enjoys sensory activities, including playing with leaves and grass, ribbons and musical toys. Familiar routines are important to him and help him to feel comfortable and reduce anxiety. He prefers quieter environments and responds well to people who are happy, friendly, calm and patient.

He communicates using PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) and requires support to remain safe while exploring his environment.

  • Provide one-to-one support when accessing the local community, ensuring the young person remains safe and comfortable while out and about.
  • Support and encourage participation in enjoyable outdoor and sensory activities, taking into consideration his individual interests and preferences.
  • Provide close supervision while in the community, including monitoring his surroundings and preventing him from placing unsafe or inedible items in his mouth.
  • Assist with personal care, including changing continence pads/nappies when required, maintaining dignity and privacy at all times.
  • Provide support with mealtimes, including assisting with lunch as required.
  • Support the use of PECS communication, following guidance from the family to understand and respond to the young person’s communication needs.
  • Support the young person with established routines, recognising that consistency and predictability are important in helping to manage anxiety.
  • Provide appropriate support with mobility, including the use of a wheelchair when required for safety and comfort.
  • Plan outings around the young person’s needs and preferences, including choosing quieter and suitable environments where possible.
  • Build a positive and trusting relationship through a patient, friendly, calm and fun approach.
  • Follow guidance provided by the family regarding the young person’s individual needs, routines, communication and safety.
  • Provide reliable support that enables the young person to enjoy a safe and positive change of routine, while giving his family a period of respite.

Personal care: Support with personal care when required.

We are looking for a friendly, patient and reliable Personal Assistant who has a calm, caring and positive approach. You should be someone who enjoys having fun, spending time outdoors and supporting a young person to explore their interests and surroundings safely.

Consistency and routine are important, so we are looking for someone dependable who can take the time to build a trusting relationship and understand the young person’s individual communication and support needs. You will need to be attentive and safety-conscious while encouraging enjoyable experiences and appropriate independence.

You should be comfortable providing personal care when required and following guidance from the family. A driver with their own vehicle is essential for this role.

Hours of work: 4 hours per weekend

Rate of pay: £13 per hour

Skills, qualifications, and experience

  • Experience or knowledge of PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) or other alternative communication methods.
  • Experience supporting individuals with sensory needs.
  • Previous experience supporting a child or young person within the community.
  • Experience supporting individuals who require close supervision due to safety awareness needs.
  • Experience with mobility support, including supporting someone who may use a wheelchair for safety and comfort.
  • Previous experience supporting individuals with autism.
  • A good understanding of autism and how this may affect communication, routine, sensory needs and anxiety.
  • Ability to provide patient, calm and person-centred support.
  • Ability to provide appropriate personal care while maintaining dignity and privacy.
  • Able to follow established routines and guidance provided by the family.
  • Good awareness of safety and risk when supporting a young person within the community.
  • Reliable and dependable, with an understanding of the importance of consistency.
  • Full driving licence and access to your own vehicle for use when supporting the young person in the community.
  • Comfortable supporting a young person who is non-verbal and uses alternative methods of communication.

Qualifications: No specific formal qualifications have been identified as essential for this role.

Successful applicants will require DBS checks & Employment References.

This role is funded by the Local Authority and is paid 4 weekly.
