Job purpose

To provide person-centred support to an independent adult with a physical disability, enabling them to access community activities, maintain their independence, and enhance their wellbeing. The role involves providing safe transportation, mobility support, personal care assistance, and companionship whilst promoting dignity, choice, and inclusion at all times.

  • Supporting an independent adult to attend a weekly swimming session.
  • Providing transportation using your own vehicle.

Personal care:

This role includes personal care duties. The successful applicant will be required to provide support with dressing, changing, toileting, and maintaining personal hygiene following swimming activities. All support must be delivered in a respectful manner that promotes dignity, choice, and independence.

These duties may vary from day-to-day.

Rate of pay: Β£18.98 per hour

Skills, qualifications, and experience

  • Experience supporting people with disabilities.
  • Experience providing personal care.
  • Experience supporting wheelchair users.
  • Moving and Handling or Health and Social Care training.
  • Understanding of person-centred support and promoting independence.
  • Self Employed
  • Female Personal Assistant (Genuine Occupational Requirement due to personal care needs).
  • Full UK driving licence and access to own vehicle.
  • Reliable, trustworthy and punctual.
  • Comfortable providing personal care and mobility support.
  • Respectful, patient and person-centred approach.

Responsibilities of a Self-Employed Personal Assistant (PA)

Self-employed Personal Assistants are responsible for managing and meeting their own employment and legal obligations. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Holding the legal right to work in the UK.
  • Registering with HMRC and ensuring all Income Tax and National Insurance contributions are paid correctly.
  • Obtaining appropriate Employer's Liability Insurance and Public Liability Insurance where required.
  • Maintaining up-to-date mandatory training relevant to the role.
  • Holding a current and valid DBS certificate.
  • Providing the employer with a written contract for services.
  • Submitting invoices for hours worked and understanding that, as a self-employed individual, they are not entitled to employee benefits such as sick pay, holiday pay, pension contributions, or other employment-related benefits.

Important: It is essential that self-employed PAs are properly registered with HMRC and fully compliant with their tax and legal obligations. If a self-employed PA is not registered with HMRC or fails to meet their responsibilities, there is a risk that liability for unpaid tax and National Insurance contributions could fall to the employer, potentially resulting in financial penalties. Employers should therefore ensure that all self-employment requirements are evidenced and in place before work commences.
