What you'll be doing

Supporting the business and our divisional offices, our Head Office functions cover all departments from the Executive Board through to the support functions such as Group Design and Technical, HR, Health and Safety, IT, Sales and Marketing, Commercial, Procurement, Group Finance, Corporate Affairs, as well as Legal and Company Secretariat.

We also have a specialised function – Barratt Partnerships.

The Group Legal & Compliance function of Barratt Developments plc, based in Coalville, Leicestershire, is run by a progressive and innovative Head of Legal.

The team is primed to meet the existing and future needs of the business.

The overall primary purpose of the role is to ensure the business is effectively equipped to operate in compliance with legal regulations and internal compliance policies.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively review, update and maintain the company’s legal ethics and compliance policies to ensure they align with current laws and regulations, covering matters such as anti‑money laundering, anti‑bribery & corruption, data protection, modern slavery, competition and other sector‑specific regulations.
  • Evaluate the company’s current operational controls, processes and procedures in relation to legal compliance, identify areas for improvement and, in collaboration with wider group legal and business members, ensure efficient implementation of any modifications or improvements.
  • Regularly review and update training, guidance and other relevant materials to facilitate effective understanding and operation of the business in accordance with the legal ethics and compliance landscape.
  • Deal with and advise on non‑compliance issues, engaging and managing suitably qualified external lawyers and experts as appropriate to address such matters.
  • Oversee and direct the activities of the data subject access request administrators to ensure efficient and effective compliance with GDPR obligations.
  • Report non‑compliance issues to the Group Head of Legal and assist with compliance reporting to Executive, Board and other committees.
  • What you’ll need

To be successful in the role, we are looking for

  • An experienced compliance lawyer (4‑7 years PQE as a guide), capable of managing a diverse workload, not only focused on reactive advice but also proactive engagement and steering of the business on matters of legal compliance.
  • Candidates who are already in‑house or are currently operating as a regulatory, compliance and/or data protection lawyer in private practice and are looking to transition to in‑house and broaden the scope of their activities.
  • Effective communication skills, ability to advise in a commercial context, experience of people/project/team management, and willingness to manage challenging and competing deadlines and assist others in the Group Legal team as appropriate.
