The Service: Cardiff & Vale Substance Use Services provide a service to people who use drugs or alcohol, their families, and communities. This includes early intervention, engaging and assessing service users, needle exchange, brief interventions, outreach, training, case management, health promotion, harm reduction initiatives, and recovery and aftercare services. The Young Persons & Young Adults service forms part of Barod’s wider Integrated Service for substance use across Cardiff & Vale.

Role Purpose: To provide face-to-face therapeutic intervention and support to young people & young adults seeking help to tackle their drug and alcohol use, using the range of models and methods agreed for use within the Cardiff Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT).

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide face-to-face therapeutic intervention and support to young people & young adults seeking help to tackle their drug and alcohol use.
  • Conduct triage, risk, and comprehensive assessments to assess individual needs, identify goals, create a support package, and review the programme and outcomes regularly within the MDT setting.
  • Carry a caseload of young people and young adults, working with them to build resilience and recovery capital until they can successfully transition into adult services or exit the services.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of group-work and structured interventions, increasing links to other supportive services.
  • Signpost service users to other relevant agencies and empower individuals to help themselves through informed choice and decision-making.
  • Maintain appropriate written client records and case notes.
  • Ensure consultation and participation with service users in all aspects of their treatment journey.
  • Stay up to date with all policies and best practice guidelines regarding substance use while building relationships with professionals and families within communities.
  • Share resources and increase knowledge within other services, thus increasing appropriate referrals into other services.
  • Develop targeted safeguarding interventions with other key partners and families within the community.
  • Maintain a positive profile of Barod and the service provided through appropriate networking, liaison, and multi-agency working.
  • Adhere to all Barod policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the undertaking of appropriate monitoring, review, and evaluation procedures.
  • Support and supervise volunteers assisting in the delivery of the service.
  • Co-operate with requests from Barod management and administration.
  • Participate in all relevant internal meetings and take up Barod's arrangements for support and supervision.
  • Undertake other reasonable duties as requested, which may not be specified within the job description.

Person Specification:

Ideally, all these requirements must be met by the candidate on appointment. However, in certain circumstances, a candidate may be appointed who does not meet a particular requirement, provided that the shortfall can be made good in a reasonable time, and the candidate brings other skills, knowledge, or experience valuable to the role and the Organisation.

Essential:

  • At least 12 months experience of working with young people/young adults.
  • Experience of liaison and networking with a cross-section of agencies and individuals.
  • Awareness of other services available to substance/alcohol users.
  • Relevant qualifications.
  • Knowledge of the local areas and communities.
  • Experience of delivering training and/or group-work.

Role-related knowledge, experience, and skills:

  • Assessment and support skills.
  • Ability to relate to young people/young adults and their families.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Good time management/organisational/administrative skills.
  • The ability to drive and access to personal mode of transport.
