We’re looking for an enthusiastic and proactive HSQE Advisor to join our growing team, supporting our Shopfitting division. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a diverse range of high-profile clients and projects, helping to shape safe, sustainable, and high-quality outcomes from the very start. You’ll play a key role in identifying risks early and ensuring that health, safety, quality, and environmental standards are built into every stage of our design and estimating process. You will have strong experience and a proven track record in occupational health and safety within retail construction.
Location: Office-based, Gloucester (will involve some travel)

Job Description
- Design, Process & Compliance
- Collaborate with pre‑construction teams to identify and manage HSQE risks at the earliest stage, ensuring full compliance with the Building Safety Act, Building Regulations, and CDM 2015.
- Partner with colleagues across estimating, design, and delivery teams to embed and uphold Barnwood’s established HSQE processes.
- Ensure that safety systems and environmental considerations are thoroughly assessed, mitigated where possible, and accurately costed during project planning.
- Provide clear, practical guidance on Safe Systems of Work, including Risk Assessments and Construction Phase Plans.
- Champion a consistent and proactive approach to HSQE standards across every stage of the project lifecycle.
- Mentoring & Capability Building
- Coach and support Site Managers, Contracts Managers, and wider teams to enhance their understanding and practical application of HSQE principles throughout every stage of project delivery.
- Lead by example to inspire a positive, proactive safety culture, promoting accountability and continuous improvement.
- Deliver engaging training and clear guidance on Barnwood’s internal processes, regulatory compliance, and sustainability standards, helping teams to confidently apply best practice on every project.
- Confidently utilise the Microsoft 365 suite to enhance reporting, communication, and collaboration across teams.
- Guide and support colleagues in effectively using HSQE software platforms, including Procore and 1Breadcrumb.
- Collect, analyse, and present HSQE and sustainability data to inform decision‑making and drive continuous improvement.
- Conduct internal audits across Contracts, CAD, Estimating, and Joinery teams to evaluate compliance with HSQE processes and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Undertake site inspections and actively contribute to lessons learned reviews and ongoing improvement initiatives.
- Evaluate and trial innovative sustainable products, sharing insights and feedback with the wider team to support Barnwood’s sustainability goals.
- Represent Barnwood at client safety meetings and industry forums, promoting our commitment to excellence in health, safety, quality, and environmental standards.
Skills & Experience
- Hands‑on experience working on retail or shopfitting construction sites, ideally within premium or high‑spec interiors projects.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, spotting potential HSQE risks and ensuring compliance from the earliest project stages.
- Full UK driving licence with flexibility to travel to sites as required.
- Recognised HSQE qualification, such as NEBOSH General Certificate or NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
- IOSH membership is desirable. If not already held, Barnwood will provide support, guidance, and coaching to help you achieve membership and grow your professional credentials.
