An excitingopportunity has arisen for a band 6 Oncology Dietitian, 22.5 hours per week (we will also considercandidates as a band 5 to 6 development post), with a strong interest and /orexperience in Lung, GI and Head & Neck cancer, to be part of our Oncology DieteticTeam at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate willbe a valued member of the oncology dietetic service and wider multi-disciplinaryteam, contributing towards specialist clinical expertise and advice for a rangeof conditions. This will include assessment and management of patients who are havingradiotherapy, surgery and chemotherapy, with highly specialised nutritionalrequirements and needs for curative and palliative intent. The post holder willprovide clinical expertise to the multi-disciplinary team to inform their decisionmaking and to provide advice and guidance to patients themselves and where necessary,carers and their families.

As part ofthe Oncology Dietetic service the post holder must be flexible and dynamic andhave a positive approach to enhancing service delivery and implementing NHSFrameworks and Quality Guidelines.

Main duties of the job

To provide therapy interventions andimplement programmes of care for lung, GI and Head & Neck cancer

To take action relative to apatients health and care needs when needing speech and language therapy anddietetic intervention before, during and after their cancer treatment fornutrition support, gastrostomy tube management and communication.

To work across the cancer pathway toprovide rehabilitation therapy focused support for patients about to undergocancer treatment

To support self-management includingpatient education and support to manage the consequences of treatment of dietand fluid intake.

To deliver high standards ofcoordinated, personalised patient centred care whilst working as an integrarmember of the MDT.

To work within the specialistservices of Lung, GI (upper and lower GI and Head and Neck Cancer MDTsincluding Clinical Nurse Specialists, Support Workers, Surgeons, Oncologists, Speech and Language Therapists and ward Dietitians, promoting effectiveinter-professional and multi-disciplinary team working within the scope of therole.

To provide dietetic support to peopleat every stage of their cancer journey, this may include signposting them toother services including psychology, cancer care centres, physiotherapy andtissue viability.

Person Specification

Skills and Abilities

  • Plan and prioritise patient work load and operational workload. Demonstrate excellent time management skills.
  • Assessment and analysis of complex dietetic problems. Develop appropriate interventions, monitor, evaluate and adapt dietetic treatment as required.
  • Able to plan, deliver and evaluate training/education programmes to student dietitians, students from other disciplines and a variety of NHS and non-NHS staff groups.
  • Skilled in behavioural change and counselling techniques.
  • Able to work independently and on own initiative
  • Car owner and driver with access to own vehicle for work related purposes

Experience

  • Significant clinical post-registration dietetic experience, ideally including specific experience of working in oncology and enteral feeding
  • Experience of complex nutrition support practices, including enteral nutrition practices.
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary team/agency working.
  • Commitment to delivering dietetic student training.
  • Attended Clinical Supervisory Skills Course
  • Experience of training student dietitians

Knowledge and Awareness

  • Knowledge of health and safety
  • Knowledge of confidentiality.

Qualifications

  • BSc or equivalent degree in Dietetics or Post Graduate Diploma in Dietetics
  • Evidence of other post-registration education and training, e.g. PENG

  • Behaviour Change Skills Training Courses
