This role is currently subject to Job Evaluation. This position is 30 hours per week. We are excited to invite applications from suitably experienced individuals, educated to Masters level, who will be able to lead and shape the medicines optimisation agenda at Barnsley Hospital. This post provides an exciting opportunity to work in a corporate role. The successful candidate will be a compassionate leader, with the ability to support and engage positively with our staff. You will be able to apply Quality Improvement methodology to ensure we continuously learn, to improve experience and outcomes. Whilst you will provide leadership to the medicines optimisation agenda, you will maintain professional and clinical credibility, and will be expected to be a visible nurse/midwife as part of the wider nursing team. You can expect to receive a very warm welcome and we will create a bespoke induction and development package with you in order to support your transition into this new role.

Main duties of the job

  • As the Matron for medicines optimisation provide strategic direction and professional nursing leadership, under the direction of the Deputy Chief Nurse, working closely with the Chief Pharmacist and Trust Medication Safety Officer.
  • Support and direct nursing/midwifery elements of medicine optimisation in relation to all Trust medicines related policies and procedures.
  • Provide specific leadership to the elements of medicines optimisation that are currently and most notably nursing led such as medicines administration, self-administration of medicines by patients and injectable medicines procedures.
  • In conjunction with the Chief Pharmacist, develop effective partnership working with colleagues across all professional groups within the Trust regarding medicines management agenda.
  • Establish and maintain networks with other professionals within and outside the Trust to share best practice and promote excellence, providing specialist expertise as a member of the National Medicines Management Nurses Network.
  • Lead a range of key workstreams and provide expertise and guidance to others.
  • Working in collaboration with pharmacy and senior nursing teams to ensure compliance with national standards, demonstrate knowledge of assurance and governance processes and manage multiple complex projects.

Person Specification – Knowledge and Awareness

  • Knowledge of current national, regional and local nursing and midwifery, professional education and health policy issues.
  • Evidence of in‑depth knowledge of nursing.
