An excellent opportunity has arisen to join Barnsley Facilities Services (BFS) at Barnsley Hospital as a Technician within the Decontamination Services Team. The team is dedicated to delivering high-quality, compliant services at the right pace and cost to Barnsley Hospital (BHNFT) and other customers, ensuring high levels of satisfaction while maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and service users.

You will work as part of a team responsible for the effective and timely decontamination of medical equipment across a range of clinical areas, managing competing priorities and meeting deadlines within a Quality Management System. The role includes collecting equipment from theatres and departments, and carrying out disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, packing, and sterilisation of reusable medical devices, including flexible endoscopes.

While prior experience is advantageous, it is not essential, as full training and support will be provided to complete a Level 2 Apprenticeship, including the IDSc Technical Certificate, leading to progression into a qualified Technician role. Initially, the role follows a Monday to Friday 10:00-18:00 shift pattern during a 12-18 month training period, transitioning afterwards to 14:00-22:00 shifts with alternate Saturdays and possible on-call duties. A permanent contract may be offered on successful completion. Applicants invited to interview must bring Maths and English GCSE certificates.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake decontamination science duties and assist (under supervision) the workforce of Decontamination Technician Supervisors in providing a specialised decontamination of medical devices service contributing to the clinical care of the patient.
  • Carry out the receipt, disassembly, cleaning, reassembly, packing and sterilisation of reusable medical devices within the ISO 13485:2016 and UK MDR 2002.
  • Record all tasks in the Healthcare Science Information Systems (tracking and tracing) database.
  • Ensure all instrument sets are assembled in accordance with the sets contents lists and sterilised to laid down procedures.
  • Ensure sterile goods are provided to all users, both internal and external, as and when required.
  • Work in accordance with the Department's Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Management Systems.
