Overview

Join the Barnsley Council Transport team as a Passenger Assistant. This permanent, full-time-equivalent role supports school transport for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, working a term-time schedule on split shifts.

Responsibilities

  • accompany children with special educational needs and/or disabilities on their journey to and from school as part of our school transport service
  • check timetables for pickups, liaise with schools, carers and families, and supervise the children at all times
  • contribute to a safe, respectful, and supportive travel environment

Requirements & Qualifications

  • empathy and patience with children who have special needs; polite, professional manner
  • ability to start and finish shifts as scheduled (split shifts, typically around 7:30–9:30am and 2:30–4:00pm) during school term time
  • Enhanced DBS Check (required)
  • readiness to discuss overseas criminal records checks if you have lived overseas in the last five years (if shortlisted)
  • prepared to start work with all necessary legal documents, e.g., a valid visa; note that the organisation does not provide sponsorship for skilled or temporary migrant workers
  • willing to comply with the role being safety critical under the Drug & Alcohol Testing Procedure
  • pension considerations apply if you have an existing pension with local government service; seek advice from the appropriate Pension Authority if relevant

  • Working arrangements: Split shifts, 5 days, term time

Salary

£25,583 – £25,989 pro rata
