Parent Support Advisor (NJC Grade 6)Athersley South PrimaryLocation: Wakefield Road, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, S71 3TPContract Type: 31 hours term time onlyContract Term: PermanentStart Date: October 2026 (or as soon after as possible)Closing Date for application: 9am on Friday 2nd October 2026The Governing Body of Athersley South Primary School are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, high-quality individual to take over the role of Parent Support Advisor at our school. The role of the PSA is to assist in tackling underachievement by working in partnership with families, parents, carers and pupils in a school context to enable pupils, particularly the most disadvantaged, to have full access to educational opportunities and overcome barriers to learning and participation. The PSA will work directly with parents in a non-judgmental way, empowering them and the families to get the most out of the educational opportunities available. This will include carrying out home visits, organising events and training for parents and carrying out assessments e.g. Early Help Assessments. The role will heavily involve safeguarding, as the successful candidate will be one of the designated safeguarding leads within school. The successful candidate will also work with targeted children and act as a point of liaison for parents and staff. The post holder will play a key role in the school’s developing involvement in the wider community.The successful candidate will be a flexible, tenacious individual who works well both independently and as part of a team. Emotional intelligence is crucial, as is an ability to work with people from all walks of life, in a non-judgmental manner. The successful candidate will:• Be qualified to at least NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in a related discipline
• Have experience of working within the community, particularly with children and their families
• Have a strong knowledge of safeguarding and either been, or possess the desire to be, a safeguarding lead
• Have the ability to have challenging conversations with parents but be able to maintain a professional and approachable manner at all times
• Have excellent communication skills including the ability to make good use of ICT
• Have a strong commitment to multi-agency workingExperience of safeguarding, carrying out family-based assessments, working in a multi-agency manner and delivering training to parents would be advantageous.
