Barnsley Council have an exciting opportunity for a Building Services Mechanical Engineer to join the team based in Barnsley. You will join us on a full-time, permanent basis. In return, you will receive a competitive salary of £42,839 - £46,142 (Plus £5000 market rate supplement until 30/04/2028).
This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic Property Services – Construction Design team, delivering high-quality, safe and sustainable public buildings across the borough. We are looking for a Building Services Mechanical Engineer with a passion for quality design, statutory compliance and practical delivery.
You will play a key role in designing and delivering mechanical building services across a diverse portfolio, including civic buildings, cultural assets, offices, leisure facilities and commercial property.
About the Role
As a Building Services Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, specification, coordination and delivery of mechanical services on new-build, refurbishment and maintenance projects. Working within a multi-disciplinary professional team, your work will span concept through to completion, offering real variety, technical challenge and professional satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and specify mechanical building services, including heating, cooling, ventilation, domestic water and gas systems
- Prepare drawings, technical specifications, schedules and tender documentation
- Manage and support projects through delivery and construction stages
- Undertake surveys, condition inspections and technical assessments
- Provide professional advice on compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements
- Coordinate with architects, quantity surveyors, project managers and external consultants
- Support contractor engagement, site inspections and commissioning activities
- Contribute to achieving safe, compliant, energy-efficient and value-for-money outcomes
About You
You will be a motivated and technically skilled mechanical engineer who enjoys working collaboratively and making a tangible difference. We’re looking for someone who has:
- A qualification in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent experience)
- Experience of mechanical services design within a construction or property environment
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and best practice
- Strong communication skills and a professional, solutions-focused approach
- The confidence to manage your own workload and contribute to team success
Working towards, or holding, professional membership (e.g. CIBSE, IMechE or Engineering Council registration) would be advantageous but is not essential.
