About The Post

Property Services – Construction Design is continuing its commitment to developing future technical professionals and is pleased to offer an opportunity to join the service as a Building Services Engineering Technician Apprentice. This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain practical, hands‑on experience while working towards a recognised Building Services Engineering qualification, supporting both mechanical and electrical disciplines. You will work as part of a multi‑disciplinary professional team, supporting the planning, design, specification, procurement, and delivery of building services installations across Barnsley Council’s property portfolio. Projects may include new build, refurbishment, and maintenance schemes across a wide range of public sector buildings.

Role

The role is varied and high‑profile, involving both office‑based and site‑based activities. Under supervision, you will support Building Services Engineers, Architects, Quantity surveyors and Project Managers with tasks such as:

  • Assisting with mechanical and electrical design information, drawings, and specifications
  • Supporting surveys, inspections, and data collection on site
  • Assisting with cost estimates, schedules, and technical documentation
  • Supporting contractor liaison and basic contract administration tasks
  • Assisting with compliance, commissioning, and handover documentation
  • Developing an understanding of public sector construction, health and safety, statutory compliance, and value for money principles

Qualifications & Attributes

You will need to be enthusiastic, organised, willing to learn, and able to work effectively as part of a team. A positive attitude, good communication skills, and a strong work ethic are essential. Knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical concepts, and a keen interest in building services engineering will be advantageous.
