About the Post

The Communist Become an opportunity in the Children & Family Social Care team at Barnsley Council, located in the Children’s Services Directorate.

Salary: £50,269 per annum

Contract type: Permanent; Hours per week: 37; Working arrangements: Agile – minimum 3 days in the office. The role is full‑time and flexible working requests, including job share, will be considered subject to consistency in case management.

Eligibility: Must hold a recognised Social Work qualification and be registered with Social Work England.

Legal: The post requires an Enhanced DBS Check. Candidates who have lived overseas in the last five years must obtain an overseas criminal records check. The Council does not sponsor visas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Practice Development Hub to deliver the Social Work Academy programme, mentoring Newly Qualified Social Workers through their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment.
  • Collaborate with the team manager to drive best practice, supporting learning and development within the team.
  • Manage a reduced caseload, enabling focused time for intervention and team support.
  • Contribute to the district’s vision of building a brighter Barnsley for every child, partnering with residents, businesses and other organisations.

Key Qualifications

  • Qualified social worker registered with Social Work England.
  • Experience in statutory children’s social work, particularly in child protection and court settings.
  • Proven self‑motivation, innovation and ability to develop plans for vulnerable children.
  • A record of mentoring students, newly qualified social workers or colleagues.
