The Opportunity

Based in our friendly Finance team, you’ll play a key role in supporting the Management Accountant, Assistant Management Accountant, and Head of Finance by helping to deliver accurate and timely financial information to the College. Your work will support key areas like budgeting, forecasting, monitoring capital spend and preparing management account schedules.

You will be responsible for preparing and posting monthly journals, including those for payroll and grant funding. You will also handle monthly accruals, prepayments, depreciation, and provisions to keep our financial reporting accurate and up to date. You will also put together management account schedules that feed into reports for the College Leadership Team and the Board, helping to guide important decisions.

A big part of your role will be ensuring all transactions are correctly coded within the Balance Sheet. You’ll carry out monthly reconciliations, and if anything doesn’t add up, it’ll be your responsibility to investigate and resolve quickly to keep everything running smoothly.

You will also assist in maintaining the fixed asset register, such as processing new additions to depreciation and disposals.

You will work closely with budget holders across the College, acting as a go‑to person for financial support. This means sharing clear, timely financial information, helping them manage their budgets, and answering any questions about spending. You’ll explain variances and help resolve any issues, ensuring everyone has the information needed to make good financial decisions.

About You

You should be detail‑oriented, proactive, and confident working with financial data. A strong foundation in accounting principles and comfort preparing journals, reconciliations, and financial reports are essential. Accuracy and timeliness are critical, as your work directly supports key financial decisions at the College.

You must be highly organised, capable of managing multiple tasks to meet monthly deadlines. A solid understanding of Balance Sheet coding and financial statement structures is important. Experience with accounting software and strong Excel skills will be highly beneficial.

In addition to technical skills, you should be a good communicator who can explain financial information clearly to non‑finance colleagues. Building positive working relationships and providing solution‑focused support to budget holders is key.

Ideally, you’ll be studying towards a recognised accounting qualification (such as AAT) or have equivalent experience in a similar role. A willingness to learn and develop within the finance team will help you succeed.

  • Four GCSEs at grades A–C (including English and Maths) or equivalent (e.g. NVQ Level 2).
  • AAT Level 2 (or equivalent) completed and working towards Level 3.
  • Minimum of one year’s experience in a finance or accounting office.
